Do you believe every child and family deserve the right to buy and eat fresh produce and healthy food at affordable prices? Are you into food justice and do you believe healthy eating is a civil right?

Then, work with students, parents, educators and the community to build school-run Hip2B Healthy Market/Farmstand/Fleas in Brownsville, Brooklyn and in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Both these neighborhoods are ranked among NYC's most food-insecure zones, by the NYC Health Dept. and multiple studies. There is limited access to fruits and vegetables and overwhelming junk food options. These neighborhoods have among the highest obesity, diabetes, heart disease rates in the city - mainly due to lack of access to affordable fresh produce and healthy activities. Be the change!

Seeking volunteers on these days! Choose any:
In school, working with elementary and/or middle school students (btw 8 am and 3 pm, hours optional)

- Tuesdays am - Help prep market in Flatbush (hours flexible) -
- Wednesday am - Help run market - 7 -10 am (and offer any special cooking, recipes, etc.)
- Thursdays - any time all day in Brownsville (help prep for market and cook with kids)
- Friday am (Brownsville) - 7-10 am - Help run market and other activities
- Saturdays, 9-3 pm (Brownsville) - Help run market and do activities with kids and families, including yoga, fitness like zumba, art, tutor, cook healthy recipes, etc.

Do you garden? Do you want to help children grow food as well? Let us know.
Looking for anyone who wants to work with students and families and educators and the local commuity to effect sustainable change by building local capacity.

All talents and skills welcome - even an hour-long yoga class.

Yes, we give internships (and welcome students of all ages to get community service credits, internship credits, etc.)

Can you cook healthy? Please offer a recipe, a demo or class, whatever you'd like to share. We can schedule together and we will promote your business.

Want to join a new flea? Have a home business and want to get more exposure? Join us.

WE LAUNCH BROWNSVILLE ON FEB. 3 AND FLATBUSH ON MARCH 7.

Saturday Market:

Set-up: 9-10 am
Activities: 10 am - 2 pm
Breakdown: 2-3 pm

School days - we arrange with you.

Do you cook or want to share a healthy recipe that day? Even hot oatmeal or smoothies? Then help us run our Hip2B Healthy Markets.. No experience necessary - just a passion for healthy food and sharing nutrition and a quality life with all.

Do you want to lead a healthy workshop - even with friends? A cooking demo or a dance class?

In health profession? Can you do blood pressure screenings, offer nutrition or diabetes education or more? Anything more? Please join us. Parents are asking!

You can also offer any kind of physical activity - dance, zumba, soccer, yoga - just for an hour in the gym.

Seeds in the Middle is a joyful partnership with volunteers and communities to have fun while getting healthy and empowering kids to create their own healthy environments, when there's nothing around them. Central Brooklyn is one of 3 neighborhoods with the highest obesity, diabetes and heart disease rates - due to lack of accessible, affordable fresh food and fitness. Let's change that together. Everyone is welcome.

All ages welcome, families, too! Students - get community service credits. And let us know if you want to continue to volunteer for Saturday markets!

About Seeds in the Middle

Location:

153 Warren Street, BROOKLYN, NY 11201, US

Mission Statement

Seeds in the Middle partners with students, educators, parents & their communities to access all opportunities, beginning with improving health, enhancing arts education and greening their environment. We empower and educate all to get healthy and scale educational and social disparities. Our pilot schools are in central Brooklyn, a neighborhood with among the city’s highest obesity, diabetes, and heart disease rates. We teach how to grow, market, cook, access and prepare fresh food, how to exercise & engage in the arts, all the elements needed to promote life-changing lifelong health. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. We cross cultures. We transform gray into green, destitution into inspiration.

Description

Seeds in the Middle offers joyful, healthy interventions that nurture the whole child and address the multiple obstacles blocking low-income children and families from getting healthy. We teach how to grow edible gardens, run a student-led Hip2B Healthy Market, bring chefs into schools, started soccer, running and fitness programs at school and in the community and music and arts in the schools. We integrate professional development for teachers so that a healthy lifestyle and environmental stewardship becomes organic and sustainable in the school community. To build community, we created Soccer for Harmony tournaments and the Crown Heights Farmers Market. In two years, we have engaged more than 1,000 families, and students and teachers report changing their habits to include more fruits and vegetables, and fitness. This is a pilot for any school and Seeds in the Middle plans to replicate.
