ORGANIZATION: ASSOCIATION OF STATE SERVICE COMMISSIONS

The Communications Volunteer/Intern will work closely with the ASC Director, External Affairs to promote the work of America’s Service Commissions and its member organizations to external audiences and improve overall communications and visibility. The volunteer/intern will work independently and report directly to the Director, External Affairs directly. S/he will participate in regular meetings (in-person or by phone); participate in an orientation; and communicate regularly with the Director, External Affairs and ASC team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (negotiable depending on areas of interest/expertise):

  • Develop and share engaging content on ASC social media channels, including State Service Blog, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, such as blog articles, infographics, short videos, photo collages, or other interactive content
  • Assist with creation of a Communications Toolkit with templates, talking points, tips and strategies, and other practical guidance for ASC members to promote national service at the state and local level
  • Manage and improve segmentation of ASC e-marketing mailing lists to optimize user engagement among target audiences
  • Support implementation of new ASC brand/logo across all ASC materials and documents
  • Design ASC flyers, forms, reports, cards, or other promotional materials to ensure consistent branding and elevate our organizational profile
  • Assist with managing ASC website and related content, as well as launching improve website and features
  • Assist with photographing ASC events, editing existing photos, compiling high-quality ASC member photos, and creating/improving an ASC Photo Gallery
  • Develop short videos (using biteable.com, iMovie, or similar low-cost options) to promote various ASC initiatives and programs
  • Provide regular updates on progress to Director, External Affairs
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Good verbal and written skills. The successful candidate must be collaborative and a self-starter.
  • Basic photography and photo editing skills
  • WordPress experience/familiarity
  • Familiarity with e-mail marketing systems (MailChimp, ConstantContact, or similar)
  • Social media management
  • Infographic experience
  • Graphic Design experience (preferred)
  • Video creation and editing experience (preferred)
  • Ability to effectively manage time and manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Ability to define and work to deadlines
  • Business Savvy
  • Understand mission of America’s Service Commissions
  • Present professional, but friendly posture
  • Maintain high ethics with communications and daily work tasks
TIMEFRAME:
  • Length of commitment: Estimated total hours: 2-8 hours per week, year-round (negotiable)
  • Scheduling will be at the discretion of volunteer/intern with input from Director, External Affairs
  • Specific days/times needed: Flexible based on other volunteer/intern’s availability
WORKSITE: This is a volunteer opportunity, to be completed using the volunteer’s own technology equipment and/or software, phone, and Internet connection. Director, External Affairs is available to meet Volunteer/Intern regularly via web meetings or in-person in Austin, TX.

Description

America’s Service Commissions (ASC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization representing and promoting the 52 state service commissions across the United States and their programs, including AmeriCorps State and Volunteer Generation Fund programs.

State service commissions are governor-appointed public agencies or nonprofit organizations made up of more than 1,000 commissioners, private citizens leading the nation’s service movement and administering 80 percent of the federal AmeriCorps funds to address pressing community needs.
