Tutor Refugee Youth

Summer Intensive In-Home tutoring intern: RefugeeOne seeks interns for the summer intensive in-home tutoring program. Tutors work one-on-one with a child who has recently arrived in the United States. In a mutually beneficial exchange of culture and knowledge, tutors will help youth ages 6-17 practice English and adjust to the U.S. school system. Clients are largely located in Rogers Park, West Rogers Park, and Albany Park.

Interns will be paired with two families for intensive tutoring to take place at the family’s home. In collaboration with the RefugeeOne youth program staff, interns create a tutoring plan for the summer based on the child(ren)’s academic needs. Tutoring materials and supplies are provided by RefugeeOne. Interns can expect to focus on English vocabulary, reading, and basic math skills during their tutoring sessions.

Requirements

  • Reliable and flexible
  • Able to work independently
  • Comfortable entering client homes and communicating with limited English speakers
  • Access to a car helpful but not required

Time commitment

  • Intern must be available for at least 6 weeks over the summer (late June through mid-August)
  • Interns must be available to tutor 12 hours a week. The time and days of your tutoring sessions will be based on your availability.
To Apply
Please send a resume and cover letter to Melissa Janisch, mjanisch@refugeeone.org. The intern selected for the program will need to complete a criminal background check.
