About

OVERVIEW:

EMERGE’s General Equivalency Diploma (GED) Program partners with adults working to obtain their GED certificates. Volunteer GED tutors work one-to-one with those studying to prepare for the GED exam, ideally resulting in the student passing all (4) subject tests. GED Tutors will also offer support and guidance along the way, encouraging EMERGE participants to pursue their educational goals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with adults as they build their skills in Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, with an emphasis on test taking
  • Guide students through the GED process by developing and executing individual education plans under the guidance of EMERGE’s Education Navigator
  • Create a welcoming and supportive environment for GED-seekers
  • Document GED student attendance and progress
Time Commitment: At least two hours 1 day a week (or more, if your time allows), Monday through Thursday 1:30 - 3:30 PM with a required 6-month commitment.

Qualified Volunteers must be:

  • Committed to racial equity
  • Motivational and encouraging
  • Patient and flexible
  • Able to demonstrate respectful and effective tutoring that addresses a variety of learning styles
  • Able to operate independently and confidently while working with GED students
Required Education and/or Experience:
  • Associated degree preferred; some post-secondary education required
  • Experience tutoring or mentoring preferred
  • GED-specific training will be provided
