The Children of Holyoke Need YOU!

Do you know that you are good with kids or think you might be? Do you like to have fun and learn at the same time? Are you patient and kind? Have a special skill? Want to make a difference?

Homework House of Holyoke is looking for tutors for our programs. We have two locations, one at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall on Chestnut Street and one at Immaculate Conception Parish House on North Summer Street. Both programs are easily accessible off of Route 391.

Our program is a non-profit afterschool program, serving students Kindergarten through 6 th grade from the Holyoke Public Schools. Our focus is helping economically disadvantaged children effectively complete their homework, as well as, work on remedial skills in reading and in math. Additionally, our students benefit from the mentoring and excellent academic example set by their tutors. Our program runs Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 5:00 (with Fridays being our "Club Day"...here is where those special skills come in!) and we are in need of volunteers/tutors any of those days. Our tutors generally come one or two days a week, whichever fits their schedule.

About Homework House Holyoke

Location:

54 N SUMMER ST, HOLYOKE, MA 01040, US

Mission Statement

Homework House provides free after-school tutoring and mentoring for children in Holyoke, Massachusetts who are at-risk for academic failure and dropping out of school. We give children a loving and caring environment. We help them improve their literacy skills so they can become productive members of our community. We work towards rekindling their interests in learning and self-improvement - one page at a time. Services are provided to school-age children without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, or gender.

Description

Every child is different. Every child has special needs. As their tutors and mentors we help children improve themselves by:

Changing their attitude toward school

Children who do not perform well in school tend to dread homework and classroom participation. By giving them a caring and positive environment, we give them a reason to rediscover the satisfaction that comes from learning.

Serving as a positive role model

Encouragement by example; show children that it’s "cool" to read well and that learning is a lifelong experience

Taking them away from past failures

By tutoring in a neutral environment and without the stigma of past failures hanging over them, children are more likely to take their first tentative steps toward self-improvement.

Giving them individualized attention

Maintain a community resource with high volunteer participation to that we can maintain our services at no cost to children. Try to maintain the lowest possible ration of tutors to children to ensure that every child feels important.

Because everybody deserves a chance to improve themselves

We provide a community service that is free to all students of all social and ethnic backgrounds and especially to those at or below the lowest academic and economic levels.
