If you’re a copywriter with experience in email marketing and a passion for helping underserved children gain access to education, keep reading! Oppia is looking for passionate individuals to join our Email Newsletter team to help create and publish our regular newsletter. This will enable us to provide updates to our supporters and raise awareness of the work we’re doing, as well as bring in donations that would help ensure the financial sustainability of the organization and enable Oppia to continue providing free educational services for underserved learners around the world who are unable to afford them. To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/3pnmkoP6okWrAJQX9 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. In the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education - making it even more difficult than before for many students to get the education they need to succeed. The learners we serve are typically from low-income families which cannot afford to pay for education; in some cases, the parents may not even have had the opportunity to attend school. Thus, to maintain and improve the services that we offer them, it is important to source donations that allow us to cover their costs. Our opt-in email newsletter gives our supporters a way to follow along with our work and receive updates on the impact of their donations. We are currently seeking strong email marketing copywriters who can help produce and edit content for our email newsletter. You should be someone who is familiar with blogging/article writing, email newsletter strategy, passionate about the problems that Oppia is solving, and excited about community engagement! • Virtual Literacy Tutoring

Support Kid Success through a literacy tutoring program! We know that child literacy is a key indicator of success later in life. Therefore, Brilliant Detroit puts a strong emphasis on early child literacy programs. We work with several partners to provide literacy instruction to students K-3. Each program offers a slightly different experience and schedule. We are happy to connect with you to provide further details and help determine which program would be the best fit for you. There are a few elements that are constant across all of our tutoring offerings, which we have outlined below. Program Details and Next Steps: We are looking for individuals who can commit to volunteering weekly for 30-45 minutes at a time. All of our literacy tutoring programs operate within the window of 4-7pm from Monday to Thursday with a variety of start times in that range. Consistency has shown to make a huge impact on our students' literacy and confidence, so please make sure you are able to attend each week. All of our tutoring programs have students and tutors meet one-on-one via Zoom to read together and engage in literacy games and activities. Some of our programs will offer an in person options for both tutors and students. To become a tutor, one must attend a program training, pass a background check (we cover the cost), and attend a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training. Once we receive your interest in our tutoring programs, we will reach out to you to learn more about you and your goals in volunteering. At that time we will also share more details about our programs and answer any questions you may have. Through this conversation, we will be able to determine which program best suits you.

  • Facilitate virtual Family Feud for older adults

Family Eldercare's Lifetime Connections Without Walls is a virtual activities program for older adults across the country. We offer social and educational sessions by phone and video. We're looking for volunteers to facilitate our 30-minute BRAIN AEROBICS session on Fridays at 1:00 pm-1:30 pm Central Standard Time (CST). The time commitment is about an hour, from 12:45 pm-1:45 pm CST to account for pre and post-session tasks. If every Friday is too much of a commitment, we can create a rotational schedule. Our Brain Aerobics session is Family Feud-style. You pull up Family Feud-type questions online and read them to participants over the phone and they come up with the answers. While we've been using Family Feud-type questions for many years, we are open to changing it up if you have ideas. The goal of the session is to get the brain engaged and have fun! While this volunteer opportunity is virtual, you must live in the U.S. Phone, computer, and internet connection is required, along with positive and fun energy that transfers well over the phone to older adults. Training and ongoing support provided. Thanks so much for considering this opportunity!

  • Refugee youth mentor

Refugee Youth Mentor (Maryland & Virginia): Volunteers are paired with refugee youth (ages 16-24 in MD; 15-24 in VA) to assist with career development and empowerment. Duties vary based on the goals and interests of the youth, but tend to focus on exploring career and educational opportunities, identifying career pathways, assisting with the job search and application process (resumé, cover letter, application, interview), and setting short and long term goals. The goal of the mentorship is to allow the youth to have a mentor that can help navigate US systems, promote civic engagement and leadership opportunities, and provide guidance with various questions and ideas as they begin thinking about future careers or education. Mentors play an integral role in showing mentees the vast array of opportunities that may be available to them in the US, as well as supporting and empowering them to explore these opportunities. Mentoring is virtual now due to COVID and volunteers need to have regular contact with the youth client, ideally once a week or at least once every two weeks. Volunteers are part of the LSSNCA Youth Mentoring Community where there are opportunities for monthly training and development meetings, as well as outside presentations in relevant areas of interest to youth clients. The duration of the mentoring relationship is typically between six months to one year. Please note: We are located in the Washington, DC Metro area, including Maryland and Northern Virginia. • Soft Doll Companions for Seniors

Special Seniors in need of hugs. Some seniors love to carry around baby dolls and soft dolls are easy to wash, dry, disinfect and the patients name can easily be written on the doll to ensure the doll is always returned if misplaced. The dolls are made of fabric and have a soft filling, with any of the facial features sewn on securely for safety purposes and have "somewhat" realistic features. They provide soft hugs and companionship for lonely seniors in nursing facilities, especially the little grandmas that enjoyed taking care of their grandchildren. If you would like to bless a senior with a new soft doll for the holidays, please reach out to me for further information. Tammy Webb, VC @ 210.585.2335 or vc@guidinghospice.com

contact us for exact drop-off locationBay Area, CA 94303
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

To sign up for this opportunity, please fill out our sign-up form on our website: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/donate-books/ With the pandemic still raging around the Bay Area, school libraries remain closed, and curbside service is rare in the Bay Area's poorest neighborhoods. Access Books Bay Area is getting books into the hands of the children who need them most, building their literacy skills, getting their attention off of a screen to read a book, through our little library book boxes initiatives, and direct book giveaways at meal distributions. But we need your help! We need more books to stock these efforts. If you have books to give, either from your personal collection, or if you are willing to purchase them, please read on for our book donation specifications. WE DO NOT ACCEPT ADULT BOOKS OR BOOKS MORE THAN 5 YEARS OLD. We accept the following types of book donations: Used Books - You can give a new life to the books you don’t need anymore! Please only recent/high quality, elementary school books. Please no workbooks, or books that are worn or have been marked in. No adult books or young adult books. We’d rather have fewer, higher quality books than a larger number that includes low interest/old books. We generally have more need for books for younger readers, grades K-2. Graphic novels are very popular. Bilingual books in Spanish are welcome. Examples of popular titles: Dog Man (and other Dav Pilkey), Elephant & Piggie (and other Mo Willems), Geronimo Stilton, Fly Guy, Dork Diaries, Pete the Cat, Splat the Cat, I Survived, Babymouse, Hilo, Narwhal, Dragonbreath, and more New Books - of course we love receiving new books! You can purchase books in the following ways: Our Books4School wishlist - this is a small family-owned bookseller with a similar mission to ours, where you can purchase very low cost new books. Our Amazon Wishlist: https://tinyurl.com/abbawish (Please note that this wishlist generally shows the hardcover version of book titles, which we prefer for library use. Choose the paperback version - paperbacks are great for book drives, cheaper and the books will go to our little lending libraries!) Another option is to make your own shorter wishlist, of books your child likes, and share that for people to browse/buy from Donors can purchase books locally at Linden Tree or Books Inc. If you are interested in running a book drive in your neighborhood, and collecting even more books for us, please see our other volunteer opportunity to run a book drive here: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/

Run a book drive for Access Books Bay Area by collecting books and donations from relatives, classmates, neighbors, and community members. By doing so, you will contribute to Access Books Bay Area’s mission to bring engaging, high interest books to children who need them most. Students in the communities we serve do not have good access to new and inviting books, especially as compared to their peers in more affluent communities. During this time of distance learning, Access Books Bay Area has developed ways to bring books to these students in under-served communities. These kids want more books! You can help by conducting a book drive. Staff at Access Books Bay Area will guide you through the process. This is a great project for families. An adult or teen is needed to supervise, but there is lots of opportunity for children to be very active in this project. Volunteers will: Create materials to announce and advertise their book drive to family, friends, neighbors, community members, etc. Share these materials by posting to online or offline communities you are part of. Collect the books and monetary donations over a period of a few weeks (this is your 'Book Drive’). Deliver the books you have collected to one of our locations in the SF Bay Area. Children can be involved at every step of the process, including making a sign, sharing it, gathering the donations, and delivering the books to us. We will provide guidance, including specifics for your communications, descriptions of types of books we are seeking, wishlists for donors who would rather purchase books, etc. Your child can even make their own 'favorite books’ wishlist to share with donors, with the aim of sharing their favorite books with other kids. You can read about a book drive example here: https://www.accessbooksbayarea.org/ayaans-book-drive/ Sign up form: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/

  • Join Minds Matter Bay Area & become a Mentor or an Instructor for a High Schooler today!

1563 Page StreetSan Francisco, CA 94117
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

To learn more and apply, visit: http://www.mindsmatterbay.org/join/ ABOUT OUR PROGRAM Minds Matter Bay Area is a 100% volunteer-run, educational non-profit that provides low-income students access to strong mentors, instructors and leaders, who help broaden their worldview and prepare them for college and beyond. Students join us as Sophomores, where they build up their academic foundations in math, science, reading, writing and critical thinking, and learn key life skills, like leadership and public speaking. As Juniors, our students focus on improving standardized test scores, managing stress and exploring colleges. During the summers after their sophomore and junior years, we encourage and support our students with finding summer programs at different colleges around the country to push them out of their comfort zones and ready them for college. Finally, as Seniors, our students focus heavily on showcasing their best selves in their college applications and learning more key skills that will ensure that they don’t just graduate from college, but that they thrive during their experience. We also support them with learning about both traditional and creative ways of paying for college, so that finances don't become a barrier to considering a great school. We’re looking for volunteers to help us with every part of this program from tutoring to mentoring to managing programs. At the heart of our organization are people committed to making an impact in education and these students’ lives. At Minds Matter, our mentees come first, but our strong community comes in at a close second. Many of our volunteers form lasting friendships and embark on new endeavors together. Whether we’re discussing the latest trends in education over dinner or picnicking in Golden Gate Park, our community knows how to get things done and have fun while doing it. We invite you to join our community and our cause. VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT The opportunity to make an impact on a student’s life comes with important responsibilities. When working with youth, one of the key components to building trust is just showing up. Commitment is key with our program-your presence, proactive communication, and conscientiousness are what makes Minds Matter Bay Area work. Sessions take place from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM every Saturday during the school year (August through May, with breaks following standard school holidays) For Sophomores and Juniors, instructional programs take place from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM and mentoring from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM For Seniors, college application prep takes place from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM We require a minimum attendance of 80% of Saturday sessions (approx. 20 of 25 weeks from August through May) and advanced notice of planned absences Building strong relationships with a student is vital for their success and growth, so we strongly prefer a three-year commitment, though we require a minimum of one year INSTRUCTORS The instructional component of our programs is designed to equip students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary for achieving academic success at school and in their standardized tests. Our instructors serve as guides and role models for our students, encouraging them to deepen their knowledge base and to enjoy the process of learning. Instructors take on a variety of different roles in our organization: leading a class on a subject area, teaching the SAT/ACT, and developing and delivering workshops on close reading, critical thinking, and statement writing skills for our students and their mentors. We will work with you to find a role that best fits your skills and experience. What we look for: Presentation and facilitation skills appropriate to a small group and/or classroom setting Depth of knowledge and passion for a particular subject Ability to take a complex concept and simplify it, so that anyone can learn it Unfettered curiosity for how things work-especially when it comes to academics and tests Passion for setting goals and gaining concrete results Ability to work in a team and navigate ambiguity Prior experience designing a curriculum and instructional materials is a plus MENTORS Each student is matched with two mentors, who work closely to help their student become well-rounded and navigate the college experience from application to graduation. Mentors work with their students to explore different majors and career paths and learn a variety of skills, like writing resumes and personal statements, managing time and stress, and presenting and discussing a perspective. Our mentors serve as positive role models and catalysts for the students, encouraging them to fulfill their full potential. What we look for: Ability to hold a high bar and set stretch goals that mentees can achieve Knows how to listen and ask the right questions to build trust in a relationship, including creating a safe space for difficult conversations and being available outside of session Inquisitive and curious about what motivates and excites people Adaptable to a wide variety of personality types, from introverts to extroverts; youth to adults Will take initiative, solve problems, be optimistic-but-realistic, collaborative and reliable Prior mentorship experience with low-income high school students is a plus To learn more and apply, visit: http://www.mindsmatterbay.org/join/

It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Please sign up at www.peninsulafoodrunners.org or call us at 408-726-2742. Are you looking for a satisfying and flexible volunteer opportunity? Peninsula Food Runners is a volunteer organization dedicated to alleviating hunger and reducing food waste since 2013. Ten years now! We are seeking new volunteers in the San Jose and Santa Clara area. We invite you to join us in feeding the hungry. Peninsula Food Runner volunteers pick up excess perishable and prepared food from participating Donors (restaurants, corporate cafeterias, supermarkets, etc.), and then deliver the food directly to our Recipients (shelters, affordable housing, community food pantries, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc.). Did you know we waste 40% of the food we produce in this country? Starting 2022, the SB 1383 bill requires restaurants, supermarkets, etc. to donate their excess food instead of throwing it out. This is exciting: it means there will be even more surplus food available to donate to those in need! We seek more weekday drivers in Santa Clara County to transport the food to local non-profits which feed the hungry. Peninsula Food Runners works with donors and recipients in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties (from South San Francisco to San Jose to Half Moon Bay). Check out our video on our website explaining what we do: www.peninsulafoodrunners.org Also check out our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/PeninsulaFoodRunners Weekday and weekend food runs (shifts) normally take less than 60-90 minutes. Use our ChowMatch.com website or app to find food runs that fit your schedule. Come join our team of volunteers! Go to www.peninsulafoodrunners.org and register under Volunteer Sign-Up. When you sign up, be sure to save your password! Also, be sure to read the food safety guidelines and take the food safety quiz to complete your registration. If you can be available on short notice, please validate your mobile number and check the box for last minute runs. Y ou can help get this food to those in need, and prevent it from going to waste! Also, if you want text reminders for the runs you sign up for, you must validate your mobile number. If you have a larger vehicle (SUV, truck or van), please indicate that. You can volunteer for a regular weekly or biweekly food run. You can also sign up for a one time run. You can volunteer as an individual, with family, co-workers or friends. Currently our online sales are our major source of revenue to fund such programs. We are now looking for friendly and reliable volunteers to help us keep our online sales going. As a volunteer you will be assisting in sorting and scanning donated materials and helping with our book donation drives. At this time, Friends is looking for volunteers under the age of 65 who can lift a 20-pound box and push a cart with 80 pounds of books.
