We do so by analyzing scientific research and clinical evidence, gathering new evidence through data science and citizen science, and recommending to individuals optimal combinations of teas, tinctures, and powders that can be used to achieve each individual's mental health goals. We conduct this research with the goal of allowing people to make informed decisions about their health and to increase access to healthy stress-coping alternatives. These healthy coping mechanisms can reduce reliance on harmful self-medication practices such as alcohol abuse or behavior likely to lead to opioid addiction. Value Proposition: Tinctures, teas and powders from herbal medicine combinations can represent better risk/reward ratios Through citizen science and data science over time we have the aspirational goal to meet and exceed evidence parity with regards to evidence of effectiveness for herbal medicines for stress & anxiety compared with pharmaceuticals. That mission is attractive for people to participate in as its an opportunity for global collaboration to create increasingly usable natural medicine for stress and anxiety. Each person can go upstream of their mental health challenges and adopt healthier coping mechanisms. • UX Writing Team Member

If you’re fluent in written English and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for someone to join our UX Writing team to help streamline and improve our written words, content strategy, and information architecture across multiple products. Please fill in this form if you'd like to help out! https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Note that the form includes a small design challenge as part of the application (see the last question). Note: To join the team, you will need to have an Android device. Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Even before COVID-19, students around the world were facing difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, lack of teacher training, and more. However, with COVID-19 forcing everyone to stay quarantined in their own homes, students now more than ever need access to free, quality education to ensure that they can continue to learn even if they cannot attend school. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. And, unfortunately, even those students who are in school may not receive the effective education they need. On Oppia’s website and Android beta app, our community of volunteers has created a series of mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with students, including in a randomized controlled trial. However, we have also identified some areas with the website where new learners get confused, as well as opportunities to improve the user experience on both platforms from an onboarding and navigation perspective. We are in the process of launching an effort to rewrite and streamline the learner and teacher user experiences from a writing-first perspective, in order to make it more cogent and unified. This is particularly important for first-time users, or learners with limited exposure to technology-based education. As a UX Writing volunteer, you would be able to help with this initiative! Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. Oppia focuses on effectiveness, and conducts rigorous user testing and RCTs to validate the lessons we offer. Learners using Oppia’s lessons have seen gains of 50+% from pre-test to post-test. Oppia's contributors actively help to provide students around the world with basic education. Please see https://medium.com/@ebelubhuhiose/86b97283edf4 and https://medium.com/@ojobusayo99/6e783aaddb74 for examples of our current work. Oppia has a community of hundreds of passionate volunteers from across the globe, so our meetings are held online at flexible times. What Our UX Writing Team contributes (but is not limited to) Write clear and concise content across multiple aspects of the product (including, but not limited to, labels and navigational elements, buttons, tutorials, and notifications). Work with other UX writers to maintain and evolve voice and tone for the content style guide, which aims to help students and teachers feel welcome and supported when using Oppia’s platform and lessons. Work from a global-first perspective, collaborating with the translations and partnerships teams to use language that internationalizes well. You'll also get to work with a product team of designers, researchers, product managers, and engineers from all around the world! There will be opportunities to share your work with them, receive feedback, and contribute to the team through mentoring, onboarding or recruiting. If you'd like to help out, please fill in our form: https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Thanks!

In the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education - making it even more difficult than before for many students to get the education they need to succeed. The learners we serve are typically from low-income families which cannot afford to pay for education; in some cases, the parents may not even have had the opportunity to attend school. Thus, to maintain and improve the services that we offer to them, it is important to source funding that allows us to cover the cost of offering these services. We generally aim to fund operating expenses through individual donations, but there are several major projects we are undertaking (such as core improvements to the website and Android app based on feedback from learners and volunteers) that will require grant funding in order to succeed. We are currently seeking strong writers who can help with grant and funding applications. This process includes helping to collate impact stories and metrics, describing the organization’s current and proposed activities in a clear and readable way, and compiling the application material for specific grants. We welcome individuals who are willing to learn and grow through this opportunity, and would be happy to guide those without prior experience in grant writing. What Our Grants and Fundraising Team Contributes Develop and submit grant proposals and letters of inquiry. Prepare and compile the components of grant submissions, and ensure that they meet granting agency requirements. Prepare relevant materials to support grants and fundraising activities, such as narratives describing program activities, concept papers, and success stories. • Marketing and social media for daily news website focused on helping the world

We are looking for an individual with a mind for marketing to join our team to help make more people become aware of our great nonprofit website. Our organization focuses on news about making the world a better place, particularly news related to topics such as global poverty, philanthropy, climate change, voluntarism and human rights. All volunteering is via the computer -- you can be anywhere in the world. The marketing volunteer usually does a mix of the following: 1) Research potential nonprofits that would be a good match for our website. Nearly all of our news is oriented towards making the world a better place, and that's also the mission of most nonprofits We particularly focus on things like global poverty, human rights, democracy, climate change and fighting modern-day slavery. So people who work at and donate to nonprofits that focus on those topic areas are an ideal audience for our news website. Therefore, we want to find those nonprofits and reach out to them. 2) The second main area is doing the outreach to the nonprofits and asking them if they can do either or both of : a) let their team members know about us. and b) let their supporters know about us in their newsletters or social media pages. In the big picture, if their supporters learn more about these topics, they will be better and more committed long-term supporters. So it's to their benefit if their supporters read our articles. It's a win-win for them and for us. We will primarily contact them via email and their social media accounts. 3) Volunteers also research potential media outlets and blogs to cover our site, send out our press releases, and keep track of coverage of our site that has occurred. The volunteer also helps promote the website by updating our Facebook, Twitter and other social media pages, attracting new followers, and interacting with our existing followers. 4) We are also creating many exciting new websites that you could be involved in marketing. They fall into two broad categories: A) a group of innovative websites to provide other nonprofits (and their supporters) with unique tools they can use to raise money for their causes. This link below gives an overview: click the "See More" buttons at the end of the sections. In the future, each logo will go to a unique website focused on that fundraising tool. About half of the logos are already linked to early drafts of the sites: http://maximumgood.org/ A few examples are: https://volunteerathon.herokuapp.com/ http://giveitup.net/ http://loseathon.org/ This is a sample of how a person's fundraising page will look - the format will be the same at most sites, but each will have a unique logo, activity and color scheme: http://loseathon.org/fundraiser We've ported the entire IRS database of 1 million nonprofits to our website, so all 1 million nonprofits will automatically have pages at all of the fundraising websites. E.g. - this is how a nonprofit profile will look http://loseathon.org/nonprofit/ B) new projects to fight global poverty, slavery and climate change. You can see the logos of many of them at these links. In the future clicking on each logo will go to a unique website: http://fortheearth.org/ There are other climate change websites we're creating and the best ones are not up there yet. http://fortheslaves.org/ One of the anti-slavery websites is a modern-day equivalent of the Underground Railroad. You can see the video we made for it and a draft of the website here - when we launch, it will be at .org - http://virtualrailroad.info No marketing experience is required, but you must be organized, pay attention to detail and be good at communicating. The marketing position is a minimum of seven hours per week for a minimum of five months. We tend to give preference to applicants who can do a sizable number of hours. You will be doing real stuff that directly brings our website to more people and supports our nonprofit's mission to help the world. You will also gain valuable experience that will build your skills and look great on a resume. Some of our volunteers have gone on to work at full-time marketing jobs for companies such as Reply.com and Bonfire Marketing. Two of our volunteers started their own non-profit organization after eight months of volunteering with us. To view our front page, visit - http://dailysource.org/ To read more about us, view the links here - http://dailysource.org/about/site If you apply for a position, you should view your commitment to it the same as if it were a paid position. We treat volunteers like normal staff and rely on them like staff. Our site is 99% volunteer run and we all depend on each other to make it a success. Please do not apply if you are viewing this opportunity as "just a volunteer position" and would treat it as less important than paid positions or other commitments you have. If you are in school, volunteering with us can function as an internship. Interns can usually receive credit with their school for their internships. If you're interested in volunteering, please email us at volunteer@dailysource.org and let us know: * How many hours per week and how many months can you do? We tend to give preference to people who can do more hours. * A description of your past work/volunteer experience and education, or a resume or a link to a LinkedIn profile. You can also apply directly through this website by clicking the button for that, and giving us the same information. Sometimes emails sent through this volunteer website are routed to spam folders, so we recommend you check your spam folder during the coming weeks in case our reply to you ends up there. We look forward to doing great work together to make the world better with you.

  • Make education accessible. Become a Hindi translator!

If you’re fluent in spoken and written Hindi and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for a translator to assist our team with translating our online story-based lessons from English to Hindi . To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. Students around the world face difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, and lack of teacher training - and, in the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education, which makes it even more difficult for them to get the education they need to succeed. Our community of volunteers has created a series of novel and engaging story-based mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with English-speaking students, including in a randomized controlled trial. We now want to expand the reach of these lessons by translating them into Hindi , in order to make them as accessible as possible to learners who have Hindi as a native language. This language is a particular focus for Oppia because we already have evidence that students who speak it would like to use our lessons, but have difficulty doing so because of the lack of translations. We are therefore seeking fluent or native-level speakers of Hindi to help with translating the lessons. What Our Translation Team Contributes Adding written translations of lessons to other languages. Advising on any barriers that students from different cultures might encounter when understanding and relating to the stories we have written to motivate the lessons. • Donate books for children in need

contact us for exact drop-off locationBay Area, CA 94303
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

To sign up for this opportunity, please fill out our sign-up form on our website: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/donate-books/ With the pandemic still raging around the Bay Area, school libraries remain closed, and curbside service is rare in the Bay Area's poorest neighborhoods. Access Books Bay Area is getting books into the hands of the children who need them most, building their literacy skills, getting their attention off of a screen to read a book, through our little library book boxes initiatives, and direct book giveaways at meal distributions. But we need your help! We need more books to stock these efforts. If you have books to give, either from your personal collection, or if you are willing to purchase them, please read on for our book donation specifications. WE DO NOT ACCEPT ADULT BOOKS OR BOOKS MORE THAN 5 YEARS OLD. We accept the following types of book donations: Used Books - You can give a new life to the books you don’t need anymore! Please only recent/high quality, elementary school books. Please no workbooks, or books that are worn or have been marked in. No adult books or young adult books. We’d rather have fewer, higher quality books than a larger number that includes low interest/old books. We generally have more need for books for younger readers, grades K-2. Graphic novels are very popular. Bilingual books in Spanish are welcome. Examples of popular titles: Dog Man (and other Dav Pilkey), Elephant & Piggie (and other Mo Willems), Geronimo Stilton, Fly Guy, Dork Diaries, Pete the Cat, Splat the Cat, I Survived, Babymouse, Hilo, Narwhal, Dragonbreath, and more New Books - of course we love receiving new books! You can purchase books in the following ways: Our Books4School wishlist - this is a small family-owned bookseller with a similar mission to ours, where you can purchase very low cost new books. Our Amazon Wishlist: https://tinyurl.com/abbawish (Please note that this wishlist generally shows the hardcover version of book titles, which we prefer for library use. Choose the paperback version - paperbacks are great for book drives, cheaper and the books will go to our little lending libraries!) Another option is to make your own shorter wishlist, of books your child likes, and share that for people to browse/buy from Donors can purchase books locally at Linden Tree or Books Inc. If you are interested in running a book drive in your neighborhood, and collecting even more books for us, please see our other volunteer opportunity to run a book drive here: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/

  • Conduct a Book Drive for Kids in Need

In SF Bay Area, driving distance from South BaySan Francisco Bay Area, CA 94301
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

To sign up for this opportunity, please fill out the sign-up form on our website: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/ Share your love of reading, while giving back to the community. This is a great project for families, including families with young children! Run a book drive for Access Books Bay Area by collecting books and donations from relatives, classmates, neighbors, and community members. By doing so, you will contribute to Access Books Bay Area’s mission to bring engaging, high interest books to children who need them most. Students in the communities we serve do not have good access to new and inviting books, especially as compared to their peers in more affluent communities. During this time of distance learning, Access Books Bay Area has developed ways to bring books to these students in under-served communities. These kids want more books! You can help by conducting a book drive. Staff at Access Books Bay Area will guide you through the process. This is a great project for families. An adult or teen is needed to supervise, but there is lots of opportunity for children to be very active in this project. Volunteers will: Create materials to announce and advertise their book drive to family, friends, neighbors, community members, etc. Share these materials by posting to online or offline communities you are part of. Collect the books and monetary donations over a period of a few weeks (this is your 'Book Drive’). Deliver the books you have collected to one of our locations in the SF Bay Area. Children can be involved at every step of the process, including making a sign, sharing it, gathering the donations, and delivering the books to us. We will provide guidance, including specifics for your communications, descriptions of types of books we are seeking, wishlists for donors who would rather purchase books, etc. Your child can even make their own 'favorite books’ wishlist to share with donors, with the aim of sharing their favorite books with other kids. You can read about a book drive example here: https://www.accessbooksbayarea.org/ayaans-book-drive/ Sign up form: https://accessbooksbayarea.org/volunteer-opportunity/conduct-a-book-drive-with-your-kids-for-a-lending-library-box/

  • Join Minds Matter Bay Area & become a Mentor or an Instructor for a High Schooler today!

1563 Page StreetSan Francisco, CA 94117
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

To learn more and apply, visit: http://www.mindsmatterbay.org/join/ ABOUT OUR PROGRAM Minds Matter Bay Area is a 100% volunteer-run, educational non-profit that provides low-income students access to strong mentors, instructors and leaders, who help broaden their worldview and prepare them for college and beyond. Students join us as Sophomores, where they build up their academic foundations in math, science, reading, writing and critical thinking, and learn key life skills, like leadership and public speaking. As Juniors, our students focus on improving standardized test scores, managing stress and exploring colleges. During the summers after their sophomore and junior years, we encourage and support our students with finding summer programs at different colleges around the country to push them out of their comfort zones and ready them for college. Finally, as Seniors, our students focus heavily on showcasing their best selves in their college applications and learning more key skills that will ensure that they don’t just graduate from college, but that they thrive during their experience. We also support them with learning about both traditional and creative ways of paying for college, so that finances don't become a barrier to considering a great school. We’re looking for volunteers to help us with every part of this program from tutoring to mentoring to managing programs. At the heart of our organization are people committed to making an impact in education and these students’ lives. At Minds Matter, our mentees come first, but our strong community comes in at a close second. Many of our volunteers form lasting friendships and embark on new endeavors together. Whether we’re discussing the latest trends in education over dinner or picnicking in Golden Gate Park, our community knows how to get things done and have fun while doing it. We invite you to join our community and our cause. VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT The opportunity to make an impact on a student’s life comes with important responsibilities. When working with youth, one of the key components to building trust is just showing up. Commitment is key with our program-your presence, proactive communication, and conscientiousness are what makes Minds Matter Bay Area work. Sessions take place from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM every Saturday during the school year (August through May, with breaks following standard school holidays) For Sophomores and Juniors, instructional programs take place from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM and mentoring from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM For Seniors, college application prep takes place from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM We require a minimum attendance of 80% of Saturday sessions (approx. 20 of 25 weeks from August through May) and advanced notice of planned absences Building strong relationships with a student is vital for their success and growth, so we strongly prefer a three-year commitment, though we require a minimum of one year INSTRUCTORS The instructional component of our programs is designed to equip students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary for achieving academic success at school and in their standardized tests. Our instructors serve as guides and role models for our students, encouraging them to deepen their knowledge base and to enjoy the process of learning. Instructors take on a variety of different roles in our organization: leading a class on a subject area, teaching the SAT/ACT, and developing and delivering workshops on close reading, critical thinking, and statement writing skills for our students and their mentors. We will work with you to find a role that best fits your skills and experience. What we look for: Presentation and facilitation skills appropriate to a small group and/or classroom setting Depth of knowledge and passion for a particular subject Ability to take a complex concept and simplify it, so that anyone can learn it Unfettered curiosity for how things work-especially when it comes to academics and tests Passion for setting goals and gaining concrete results Ability to work in a team and navigate ambiguity Prior experience designing a curriculum and instructional materials is a plus MENTORS Each student is matched with two mentors, who work closely to help their student become well-rounded and navigate the college experience from application to graduation. Mentors work with their students to explore different majors and career paths and learn a variety of skills, like writing resumes and personal statements, managing time and stress, and presenting and discussing a perspective. Our mentors serve as positive role models and catalysts for the students, encouraging them to fulfill their full potential. What we look for: Ability to hold a high bar and set stretch goals that mentees can achieve Knows how to listen and ask the right questions to build trust in a relationship, including creating a safe space for difficult conversations and being available outside of session Inquisitive and curious about what motivates and excites people Adaptable to a wide variety of personality types, from introverts to extroverts; youth to adults Will take initiative, solve problems, be optimistic-but-realistic, collaborative and reliable Prior mentorship experience with low-income high school students is a plus To learn more and apply, visit: http://www.mindsmatterbay.org/join/

It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Please sign up at www.peninsulafoodrunners.org or call us at 408-726-2742. Are you looking for a satisfying and flexible volunteer opportunity? Peninsula Food Runners is a volunteer organization dedicated to alleviating hunger and reducing food waste since 2013. Ten years now! We are seeking new volunteers in the San Jose and Santa Clara area. We invite you to join us in feeding the hungry. Peninsula Food Runner volunteers pick up excess perishable and prepared food from participating Donors (restaurants, corporate cafeterias, supermarkets, etc.), and then deliver the food directly to our Recipients (shelters, affordable housing, community food pantries, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc.). Did you know we waste 40% of the food we produce in this country? Starting 2022, the SB 1383 bill requires restaurants, supermarkets, etc. to donate their excess food instead of throwing it out. This is exciting: it means there will be even more surplus food available to donate to those in need! We seek more weekday drivers in Santa Clara County to transport the food to local non-profits which feed the hungry. Peninsula Food Runners works with donors and recipients in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties (from South San Francisco to San Jose to Half Moon Bay). Check out our video on our website explaining what we do: www.peninsulafoodrunners.org Also check out our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/PeninsulaFoodRunners Weekday and weekend food runs (shifts) normally take less than 60-90 minutes. Use our ChowMatch.com website or app to find food runs that fit your schedule. Come join our team of volunteers! Go to www.peninsulafoodrunners.org and register under Volunteer Sign-Up. When you sign up, be sure to save your password! Also, be sure to read the food safety guidelines and take the food safety quiz to complete your registration. The Friends of the Redwood City Public Library is a 100% volunteer-based organization that sells pre-owned books and media to fund Redwood City Library programs like Little Learners or the Summer Learning Challenge. Currently our online sales are our major source of revenue to fund such programs. We are now looking for friendly and reliable volunteers to help us keep our online sales going. As a volunteer you will be assisting in sorting and scanning donated materials and helping with our book donation drives. At this time, Friends is looking for volunteers under the age of 65 who can lift a 20-pound box and push a cart with 80 pounds of books. Per library policy, all volunteers will have to wear a mask, follow the sign- in/sign-out policy and take a temperature check upon arrival. Masks and nitrile gloves are available on the sign-in table. Our operation of sorting and scanning books is a labor-intensive process. We have set an age qualifier out of an abundance of caution since, despite our requiring masks and social distancing, a steady stream of people walk past the Friends sorting area so you will be around others while volunteering. Friends is also working to find volunteer opportunities that can be done from home. We will give an update once opportunities have been identified. If you would like to make a positive impact on our community and support our Library by volunteering, please send a short email to us at this address: friendsofrwclibrary@gmail.com

Activities are chosen by each participating site to meet their own particular needs and can range from raking leaves and hauling trash to painting signs and building trails.
