Refugee youth mentor
Refugee Youth Mentor (Maryland & Virginia): Volunteers are paired with refugee youth (ages 16-24 in MD; 15-24 in VA) to assist with career development and empowerment. Duties vary based on the goals and interests of the youth, but tend to focus on exploring career and educational opportunities, identifying career pathways, assisting with the job search and application process (resumé, cover letter, application, interview), and setting short and long term goals. The goal of the mentorship is to allow the youth to have a mentor that can help navigate US systems, promote civic engagement and leadership opportunities, and provide guidance with various questions and ideas as they begin thinking about future careers or education. Mentors play an integral role in showing mentees the vast array of opportunities that may be available to them in the US, as well as supporting and empowering them to explore these opportunities. Mentoring is virtual now due to COVID and volunteers need to have regular contact with the youth client, ideally once a week or at least once every two weeks. Volunteers are part of the LSSNCA Youth Mentoring Community where there are opportunities for monthly training and development meetings, as well as outside presentations in relevant areas of interest to youth clients. The duration of the mentoring relationship is typically between six months to one year. Please note: We are located in the Washington, DC Metro area, including Maryland and Northern Virginia. Soft Doll Companions for Seniors
Special Seniors in need of hugs. Some seniors love to carry around baby dolls and soft dolls are easy to wash, dry, disinfect and the patients name can easily be written on the doll to ensure the doll is always returned if misplaced. The dolls are made of fabric and have a soft filling, with any of the facial features sewn on securely for safety purposes and have "somewhat" realistic features. They provide soft hugs and companionship for lonely seniors in nursing facilities, especially the little grandmas that enjoyed taking care of their grandchildren. If you would like to bless a senior with a new soft doll for the holidays, please reach out to me for further information. Tammy Webb, VC @ 210.585.2335 or vc@guidinghospice.com

Fidget Blankets for Dementia Patients
Please help us bring comfort to our patients that are suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer's. Fidget blankets or busy blankets help to soothe patients by providing them with tactile stimulation that helps them keep their hands busy. These blankets have different textures and small items that are securely attached to the blanket that the patient can engage with such as zippers, buttons, rattles, soft little books, a tiny stuffed animal, ribbons, laces etc. The blanket is small about 2' x 2' in size and sits on the patients lap. If you would like to help with this opportunity, please reach out to Tammy Webb, VC @ 210.585.2335 or vc@guidinghospice.com for more information. Thank you for your consideration.

Seeking Communications/Public Relations Volunteer
We're seeking assistance with Communications/PR for pitching and media outreach. SmartResponse curates localized "How to Help" lists to help donors make more informed decisions about where to donate when disasters happen. We want this data utilized by media -- to inform their "how to help" lists. This is a highly rewarding activity -- if more support ($$) reaches the local organizations on the ground after disasters, people will get help faster, it'll be more effective/efficient = less suffering and fewer lives lost. We need help: * Engaging more journalists. * Writing more Op-Eds. * Building media lists. * Pitching stories/interviews.

The learners we serve are typically from low-income families which cannot afford to pay for education; in some cases, the parents may not even have had the opportunity to attend school. Thus, to maintain and improve the services that we offer them, it is important to source donations that allow us to cover their costs. Our opt-in email newsletter gives our supporters a way to follow along with our work and receive updates on the impact of their donations. Web Application Developer
with OPPIA FOUNDATION INCWe are looking for a volunteer software developer to collaborate on building features for an open source education platform that aims to make high-quality basic education accessible for everyone. The volunteer would contribute to the development of tools that enable the community to translate lessons into multiple languages, or improve the learning experience for under-resourced learners around the world who use the platform to learn. We currently have openings available on the Web and Android teams! Important! To get started, please don't submit an application through VolunteerMatch. Instead, please follow the instructions on our GitHub wiki pages: Web: https://github.com/oppia/oppia/wiki/Contributing-code-to-Oppia#setting-things-up Android: https://github.com/oppia/oppia-android/wiki/Contributing-to-Oppia-android#onboarding-instructions This is important because we receive multiple applications per day through VolunteerMatch and don't have the capacity to reply to each one. In contrast, the wiki instructions above provide all the information needed for you to get started with the project in a fully self-service way :) Who Are We? The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Even before COVID-19, students around the world were facing difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, lack of teacher training, and more. However, with COVID-19 forcing everyone to stay quarantined in their own homes, students now more than ever need access to free, quality education to ensure that they can continue to learn even if they cannot attend school. Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. Oppia focuses on effectiveness, and conducts rigorous user testing and RCTs to validate the lessons we offer. Learners using Oppia’s lessons have seen gains of 50+% from pre-test to post-test. Oppia's contributors actively help to provide students around the world with basic education. Please see https://medium.com/@ebelubhuhiose/86b97283edf4 and https://medium.com/@ojobusayo99/6e783aaddb74 for examples of our current work. Oppia has a community of hundreds of passionate volunteers from across the globe, so our meetings are held online at flexible times. What our Software Development team contributes Software developers will work closely with other volunteer developers around the world, Oppia's design team, and NGOs in various countries who are in direct contact with students, in order to implement features and key functionality to help learners and translators. The team is very collaborative and has a culture of providing and receiving constructive feedback through code reviews. Some examples of projects we're working on include: Adding functionality in the "contributor dashboard" to ease the process of translating lessons Fixing small issues in the lesson player that confuse students who haven't used a phone before Finding ways to make the site faster and more performant on low-end devices Don't worry if you're new to "open source", or if you're still a student -- many of our contributors are, too, and we'd be more than happy to provide mentorship and support if this is your first time contributing to an open source project! The main thing is that you care deeply about helping people around the world to learn things better, and that you're responsible and reliable. If you'd like to help out, please follow the instructions on our GitHub wiki pages to get started: Web: https://github.com/oppia/oppia/wiki/Contributing-code-to-Oppia#setting-things-up Android: https://github.com/oppia/oppia-android/wiki We look forward to meeting you!

As a result, many will be at a greater risk of dropping out of school, homelessness, unemployment, early parenthood, or having a criminal record. However, having a caring and trusted adult in their lives can help change this outcome for many. A Transition Coach is a caring, responsible, adult volunteer who serves as a trusted guide to a youth, currently living in foster care, who is close to aging out of the system. The goal of the Transition Coaching Program is to match this population of youth with trained, transition coaches (volunteers) who will guide them in developing transition plans that help them reach their desired goals. The coach will also help the youth explore viable options for them with regards to education and/or employment as well as offer support as they navigate their road toward adulthood. Volunteers are matched with a youth, age 14 or older, to assist the youth in developing their transitional goals and to offer additional support outside of the foster care system. The volunteers meet with the youth a minimum of twice a month in the youth’s current placement or in some other agreed upon public setting. The volunteer and youth will develop a meeting schedule that works for them. Youth live across greater Houston and all surrounding areas. Training and ongoing support are provided. To become a Transition Coach, you must be willing to commit at least a year to the youth with whom you ae matched, attend an orientation and training session, submit a completed volunteer application, participate in a personal interview and pass a criminal background screening. Orientations are held each month ; alternating day time and evening sessions.

If the answer is YES, we would LOVE to add you to our Office Support Team working along side of our fabulous Administrative Team at our South Houston Office! You would be helping us support those that care directly for our hospice patients by answering phones, filing, making copies, preparing informational packets, making phone calls, and many other support related tasks during our normal office hours Monday thru Friday 8am - 5pm.
