At Empower Work, we’ve had volunteers stick with us for years, advancing to become mentors or take increased responsibility on the line. Here’s what one current volunteer says about their growth and impact at Empower Work: "I believe so strongly in the power of coaching, and that everyone can and should have the experience of good coaching at work. It’s clear that so many of our texters do not have anyone they can talk with candidly at work, much less someone who has coaching or counseling experience. It feels really valuable and do-able to provide that support to individuals via my volunteer shifts." Interested? We are looking for a volunteer software developer to collaborate on building features for an open source education platform that aims to make high-quality basic education accessible for everyone. The volunteer would contribute to the development of tools that enable the community to translate lessons into multiple languages, or improve the learning experience for under-resourced learners around the world who use the platform to learn. We currently have openings available on the Web and Android teams! Important! To get started, please don't submit an application through VolunteerMatch. Instead, please follow the instructions on our GitHub wiki pages: Web: https://github.com/oppia/oppia/wiki/Contributing-code-to-Oppia#setting-things-up Android: https://github.com/oppia/oppia-android/wiki/Contributing-to-Oppia-android#onboarding-instructions This is important because we receive multiple applications per day through VolunteerMatch and don't have the capacity to reply to each one. In contrast, the wiki instructions above provide all the information needed for you to get started with the project in a fully self-service way :) Who Are We? The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Even before COVID-19, students around the world were facing difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, lack of teacher training, and more. However, with COVID-19 forcing everyone to stay quarantined in their own homes, students now more than ever need access to free, quality education to ensure that they can continue to learn even if they cannot attend school. What our Software Development team contributes Software developers will work closely with other volunteer developers around the world, Oppia's design team, and NGOs in various countries who are in direct contact with students, in order to implement features and key functionality to help learners and translators. The team is very collaborative and has a culture of providing and receiving constructive feedback through code reviews. Some examples of projects we're working on include: Adding functionality in the "contributor dashboard" to ease the process of translating lessons Fixing small issues in the lesson player that confuse students who haven't used a phone before Finding ways to make the site faster and more performant on low-end devices Don't worry if you're new to "open source", or if you're still a student -- many of our contributors are, too, and we'd be more than happy to provide mentorship and support if this is your first time contributing to an open source project! The main thing is that you care deeply about helping people around the world to learn things better, and that you're responsible and reliable. Got a soft spot for sentence composition? Love long division or adore algebra? How about sharing your everyday reading, writing, and math skills with a dedicated adult learner in your community? Seeds of Literacy, an award-winning nonprofit organization that provides free GED prep and basic education to adults in the Cleveland area, has an urgent need for people just like you to volunteer as adult literacy tutors. The shocking truth is that an estimated 66% of adults in Cleveland are functionally illiterate, and may struggle with everyday necessities like reading a bus schedule and understanding medication labels. This is where you can make a very real difference! Tutors work one-to-one with students to improve reading, writing, and math skills, offer encouragement and support, and help students develop positive attitudes towards learning. Generally we ask that tutors come to one class session per week for one year. We can, however, make accommodations for those with special circumstances. Classes are two hours long, and we offer a flexible class schedule with sessions scheduled throughout the day to accommodate personal preference and availability. Tutoring sessions take place in our Virtual Classroom on Zoom. You don’t have to be an educator to help - we’ll train you. • Attorneys - help victims of child abuse

Legal services are a frequent need for clients that contact Justice for Children. Keeping their child safe from an abuser may require protective orders, divorce from an abuser, the need to establish or modify child custody and, many times, child support. Many of the victimized children we work with are the product of unmarried parents creating a need for the establishment of paternity. These clients lack the monetary resources to hire attorneys. The abuse of their child and lack of immediate resources to access services desperately places them in a crisis mode and highly emotional making the process even more daunting to them.

  • GIVING VIRTUAL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Show seniors that they are loved by making cards, sending emails, and making crafts. Seniors are sitting alone in their rooms with many having few or even no family visits. Here is where you come in. You can show them they are loved and appreciated by making them cards and sending emails. Brighten up their rooms with decorations, and give them comfort with wheel chair pillows. One volunteer is even making puzzles for them to do. Some are writing stories for them to read. We want to bring smiles to their faces. We also have a need for people to make educational videos. Make videos and/or interesting interactive curriculum for volunteer training. I would like the volunteers to get their training online watching and interacting with something fun and engaging. After all, volunteering should be enjoyable! • Compeer Calling Volunteer

WHAT IS THE COMPEER PROGRAM? "Compeer" means a companion who is also a peer or equal. Loneliness, failure, fear and loss of self-esteem are universal experiences of those who suffer from a mental illness. A caring friend can help restore joy and hope to a life that is often empty of both. Compeer is a non-profit program which matches caring, sensitive, and trained volunteers with mental health service recipients in one-to-one friendship relationships. WHO ARE COMPEER VOLUNTEERS? Compeer volunteers are individuals of all ages, walks of life, races, and religions who enjoy companionship and helping people. Many of them have had experiences with loneliness and difficult times in their own lives, which enables them to bring a special understanding to the Compeer relationship. They are screened, trained, and matched by Compeer and the referring therapists. The volunteers must also submit references to help assure reliability and consistency. In addition to having fun together, the volunteer may be able to advocate on behalf of their friend concerning housing, disabilities, etc. The volunteer is not a therapist but a friend who becomes a helpful part of the mental health team. HOW DO I GET A COMPEER VOLUNTEER? Anyone currently involved in mental health therapy (in a hospital, day treatment program, mental health clinic, rehabilitation program or with a private practitioner) can request a referral to Compeer from his/ her therapist. Compeer will then make every effort to arrange a volunteer as quickly as possible. WAYS TO VOLUNTEER 1) One-to-One Friendship - 4 hours a month 2) Compeer Calling Volunteer - 10-15 minutes a week 3) E-Buddy Volunteer - contact primarily through email, texting, and/or electronic communication 4) Pen Pal - written correspondence ( letters, cards ) at least twice year month to offer support 5) Member of Compeer Advisory Board - volunteer serves to help on the Compeer Advisory Board to give input and decision making. You will be able to work from home at the hours you wish to work and do so from anywhere in the United States Our hotline has been in place and operational since 9/30/20, and we are growing. Because we assist people through crises as our mission, we have been contacted for assistance both by people affected by COVID as well as those affected by the many natural disasters around the nation. If you wish to assist in our advocacy work, we are looking primarily for those with prior problem-solving and/or conflict resolution experience assisting others including attorneys, mediators, and others who might have this type of experience. However, we are putting in place a training module that will also prepare others who do not have such experience to do this work on behalf of others in need. • Development director for first-ever national advocacy hotline

Help Now! Advocacy is now searching for a new development director who will lead the organization into sustainability as it continues to transform itself and its nationally-unique services from a local organization that has served 9300+ clients over the past 18 years into a virtual and national organization now offering our services through the first-ever national advocacy hotline for individuals and families in crisis. (A national phone company has donated the hotline and all services associated with it to our organization. The individual we are seeking for this position must have prior experience as a non-profit development director or otherwise have considerable knowledge in the area of fundraising and grant writing for non-profits. He or she must also be a creative individual with personal charisma and impeccable credentials. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to get in on the "ground floor" of a unique social service that has the potential to impact the lives of great numbers of Americans. While we are looking for an individual who has the ability to work without pay for a period of time as funding is procured for the position, we also expect this to become a fully paid position with benefits within a reasonable period of time with pay growing as the organization grows. Applicants should be clear that the magnitude of their contributions/funding procured as a volunteer DD will be a very strong consideration when a determination is made by our board of directors as to who fills that paid position. If sustainable funding has been created by this individual while in the volunteer DD position, unless there is some other unforeseen consideration that would come into the hiring assessment, it is highly likely that the individual would be placed in the paid position. Preferable experience would be in overseeing the expansion of the non-profit or business entity. He or she must also be a creative visionary with personal charisma and impeccable credentials. Applicants should be clear that, while the magnitude of their contributions as a volunteer ED will be a strong consideration when a determination is made by our board of directors as to who fills that paid position when available, their volunteer ED work is not a guarantee of assuming the paid position. That said, our organization is thoroughly professional and is not looking to take advantage of anyone. It is fair to state that an outstanding performance, as perceived by our board, in the volunteer ED position will give the applicant for that position an "inside track" on the paid position. From area farms, markets to food banks, pantriesKansas City, MO 64111
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

At After the Harvest, we glean excess produce from farm fields, but also pick up already harvested excess produce from farms, farm stands and farmers’ markets and deliver it to food banks (like Harvesters) and pantries to feed hungry people. We also need lead volunteers who will "Adopt-a-Market" for the season on a rotating schedule. (For example, pick-up at City Market every 1st and 3rd Sunday, or pick-up at Overland Park Farmers' Market every 2nd Saturday). Each Lead Produce Rescue Driver will receive special training and packaging at the beginning of the season. Additional one-time volunteers will be matched with a Lead Produce Rescue Driver to help with pick-up and delivery to nearby food agencies. We currently pick up at the following Farmers Markets through October: Brookside, Overland Park City Market, Lenexa, Parkville, Lee's Summit, and Unity Village. If you have a vehicle that can haul produce, and you have a heart to help those in need...ATH can sure use your help! Pick up donated produce every week or periodically from farms, markets and distributors. Bring the kids and make the experience come full circle by delivering to food banks, pantries, shelters and community kitchens in the Greater Kansas City area. Other opportunities: Your organization/group wants to glean? Reserve your date now. You want to lead a gleaning? We always need field supervisors. You want us to come speak to your organization? We’d love to meet you! After the Harvest has a very small staff, so we only succeed because of volunteers like you! Thanks so much for helping rescue fresh, nutritious produce to feed those in need.

It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

Heart of America Humane Society hosts a Dog Adoption Event most Saturdays at PetSmart Olathe (119th & Strang Line) from Noon to 3 pm. The event is open to the public during those hours. We have a volunteer van driver (good driving record required) that drives to Kansas City KS Animal Services to transport the dogs from the shelter to PetSmart. While the dogs are being transported, there are volunteers setting up the adoption event at PetSmart, which involves setting up tables, kennels, and supplies used during the event. We would like everyone volunteering for the event to arrive around 11:45 am to assist with unloading the dogs when the van arrives. Then during the event, you will work with a dog. Get to know them, train them on basic commands, spoil them rotten, and talk with prospective adopters about your dog. At the end of the event, those dogs that were not adopted are transported back to the shelter and we ask that the volunteers assist in taking down the tables, kennels, etc. The first Saturday that you volunteer we ask that you come 30-45 minutes early to fill out paperwork and have a short training/orientation. We look forward to hearing from you. We welcome everyone, but if you are under 18 you must be accompanied by a parent. Lasagna Love is a global movement with thousands of people cooking and delivering meals to families in their communities. What we do is simple: we feed families, spread kindness, and strengthen communities. Our mission is not only to help address the incredible rise in food insecurity among families but also to provide a simple act of love and kindness during this time full of uncertainty and stress. Lasagna Love matches neighbors who can provide a meal with a neighbor who needs a little help. You can decide how often you participate - once a month, multiple lasagnas weekly, or somewhere in between. You decide how far you can drive to deliver a meal, and if you can accommodate special diets like vegetarian or gluten free. The Lasagna Love Team does the best to match you with a neighbor in need. We also provide online trainings to help you get started and drop off meals contact free, recipes if you are looking for inspiration, and any other support you need. If you are looking for a flexible volunteer opportunity, or a way for your family to volunteer together to make a meal for a neighbor in need, this is a great opportunity to spread some kindness.
