The Anixter Center is seeking volunteer tutors for our adult literacy program! Volunteers would be expected to complete approximately fourteen hours of online training on being a literacy tutor and working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Once training is complete we ask that volunteers commit to one hour a week of one-on-one tutoring for a minimum of three months but we would of course prefer that they stick around longer! We currently have in person (socially distanced, wearing a mask, outdoors when feasible) options or virtual options depending on the learner’s access to and ability to use the internet.

Volunteer Oral History Interviewer - Neighborhood Stories Project
The Neighborhood Stories Project is a storytelling initiative by the NYC Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS) with the mission of recording the memories of New York City residents through a series of oral history interviews. These interviews will be preserved in perpetuity at DORIS - connecting local history with the records of City government maintained in the collections of the Municipal Archives and Library. The interviews will reflect people’s unique experiences of life in New York City and will be available for researchers, teachers, students, activists, and residents interested in discovering the history of their city from the perspective of its community members. We are looking for volunteers to interview participants for the Neighborhood Stories Project. Volunteers will interview participants about their lives and communities in New York City. Once recorded, the interview is preserved in perpetuity at the Municipal Archives with the goal of documenting the personal histories of local residents and changes in their communities from a personal perspective. Interviewers should have access to a phone (including landline), computer, or the internet. Volunteers can also assist the project in recruiting other participants in their families and communities by spreading the word about the Neighborhood Stories project and sharing informational materials (which can be provided). Volunteers will primarily serve remotely but there are also opportunities to conduct in-person interviews at partner locations and participate in community outreach events as an ambassador for the project. We offer social and educational sessions by phone and video. We're looking for volunteers to facilitate our 30-minute COFFEE TALK session on Wednesdays at 10:30 am - 11:00 am Central Standard Time (CST). The time commitment is about an hour, from 10:15 am-11:15 am CST to account for pre and post-session tasks. If every Wednesday is too much of a commitment, we can create a rotational schedule . Coffee Talk is a conversational session. Program Details and Next Steps: We are looking for individuals who can commit to volunteering weekly for 30-45 minutes at a time. Consistency has shown to make a huge impact on our students' literacy and confidence, so please make sure you are able to attend each week. Refugee Youth Mentor (Maryland & Virginia): Volunteers are paired with refugee youth (ages 16-24 in MD; 15-24 in VA) to assist with career development and empowerment. Duties vary based on the goals and interests of the youth, but tend to focus on exploring career and educational opportunities, identifying career pathways, assisting with the job search and application process (resumé, cover letter, application, interview), and setting short and long term goals. The goal of the mentorship is to allow the youth to have a mentor that can help navigate US systems, promote civic engagement and leadership opportunities, and provide guidance with various questions and ideas as they begin thinking about future careers or education. Mentors play an integral role in showing mentees the vast array of opportunities that may be available to them in the US, as well as supporting and empowering them to explore these opportunities. Soft Doll Companions for Seniors
Special Seniors in need of hugs. Some seniors love to carry around baby dolls and soft dolls are easy to wash, dry, disinfect and the patients name can easily be written on the doll to ensure the doll is always returned if misplaced. The dolls are made of fabric and have a soft filling, with any of the facial features sewn on securely for safety purposes and have "somewhat" realistic features. They provide soft hugs and companionship for lonely seniors in nursing facilities, especially the little grandmas that enjoyed taking care of their grandchildren. Fidget Blankets for Dementia Patients
Please help us bring comfort to our patients that are suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer's. Fidget blankets or busy blankets help to soothe patients by providing them with tactile stimulation that helps them keep their hands busy. These blankets have different textures and small items that are securely attached to the blanket that the patient can engage with such as zippers, buttons, rattles, soft little books, a tiny stuffed animal, ribbons, laces etc. The blanket is small about 2' x 2' in size and sits on the patients lap. Please read the following information about the Community Meal prior to signing up for service. Community Meal Volunteer Requirements Must follow dress code: long pants (no shorts, skirts, or leggings), shirt with sleeves (no tank tops or crop tops), closed toe shoes Must be willing to serve in all areas of the Community Meal and at the discretion of the Dining staff Must be able to stand for 2 hours Must be able to lift 20 lbs. RHP’s are clients who are working to overcome homelessness by staying on the Catholic Charities campus for an extended period of time, completing life skills classes, and apprenticeship trainings at Catholic Charities. They are not staff members and should not be referred to when seeking information about your volunteer assignment. RHP’s can be identified by their badges which have a large red or blue bar on the top or bottom. Please note our clients come from a variety of life experiences and circumstances. If you have a questionable or uncomfortable interaction with a client, notify a Catholic Charities staff member immediately. We'll work with your schedulePSAR Volunteer duties: The primary responsibilities of a VIP PSAR Volunteer are to provide hike safety messaging to the public to mitigate the number of injuries and incidents taking place on the park’s busiest and most strenuous trails. The volunteer may perform one of two main tasks of sharing hike safety messaging while stationed at a trailhead information table or hiking along a trail to provide safety messaging to the public hiking the trail. PSAR Tabling Duties The volunteer will staff a stationary information station at a designated trailhead. The volunteer will provide high quality customer service and information in every contact they make. Utilize park radios to communicate with park dispatch about hiker incidents or visitor rule violations. Volunteer will interact with the public sharing safety messaging related to a trail’s unique hazards and other hike safety tips. If planning and preparation do not match, the volunteer works with the hiker(s) to create an alternative plan that would reconcile those components. If an alternative plan is not viable, or if the hiker(s) are unwilling to negotiate, the volunteer should provide education on signs and symptoms that are indicative of the on-set of heat or hydration related illnesses. During tabling explains basic requirements to visitors concerning safe hiking procedures in the Mojave Desert and trail specific information. Also gives information regulations to park visitors and provides advice on park activities and cultural, historical, and/or natural resources history within the park. Record Keeping 'Patrol Logs’ capture the information necessary for the justification of the funding basis, allocation of resources, and logistical decisions. All volunteers need to complete these forms at the end of each patrol. All patrol logs will be distributed to the PSAR Volunteer supervisor at the end of their shift. PSAR Volunteer Physical Requirements - Physical Demands: Volunteer will be working outside in temperatures ranging from 45 degrees in the winter to 100 degrees in the spring and in a variety of weather conditions- rain, sun, daylight, evening, and high winds. Volunteer will be hiking solo over uneven terrain and up/down a variety of elevation gains. The volunteer must be able to carry a 20-pound pack with water, first aid kit, and park radio. The volunteer must be able to walk 3-7 miles in a day in the desert. The volunteer must be able to do some rock scrambling, walking narrow ledges and climbing ladders. The volunteer may be required to provide first aid/CPR to the level trained until requested help arrives in the case of a first-aid scenario. Environmental Hazards: Volunteer will be standing on and walking desert conditions which has a graded slope, loose gravel, and outside conditions. Work is generally done outside in direct sun and in temperatures that can vary widely. Temperatures ranging from 45 degrees in the winter to 100 degrees in the spring and in a variety of weather conditions- rain, sun, daylight, evening, and high winds. Volunteer may encounter vegetation pollen blowing and possible desert creatures like snakes, scorpions, spiders, and other mammals. Benefits/Training: As a NPS volunteer, you will receive on the job training about the National Park Service, Lake Mead NRA, and the surrounding areas. You will work with an Interpretation Ranger to receive an orientation of assigned park trails and resources. Volunteer will have the opportunity to work with people from diverse backgrounds and a love for the National Parks. Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years old, enjoy working with people from a variety of backgrounds, and have a willingness to learn about the park resources. Volunteer must be physically able to hike on uneven surfaces and up/down elevation gains. The volunteer will become familiar with and recommending products for sale based on the visitor's inquiry. Volunteer will operate a cash register (point of sale system) and credit card machine. He/she will handle cash; make correct change, and complete credit card transactions for customers so the account balances at end of day. Volunteer will stock brochure racks with handouts and inform the visitor center supervisor when more stock is needed. Volunteer may be asked to fold brochures, so they fit into the Information desk slots. The volunteer will also check for sufficient brochure stock at the information desk and other visitor center locations and help with organizing and taking inventory of supplies. Volunteer will also help in arranging and tidying library books and DVD/CD’s so they are better organized and categorized. Volunteer will collect and record visitor contacts throughout the day. This may be done using a handheld lap counter or by reading the electronic visitor counter. This includes recording film statistics and Jr. Ranger statistics. Volunteer will also record their own hours each time they work. Volunteers are required to follow all CDC, state and federal requirements regarding COVID-19 when working at the visitor center.
