The Anixter Center is seeking volunteer tutors for our adult literacy program! Volunteers would be expected to complete approximately fourteen hours of online training on being a literacy tutor and working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Once training is complete we ask that volunteers commit to one hour a week of one-on-one tutoring for a minimum of three months but we would of course prefer that they stick around longer! We currently have in person (socially distanced, wearing a mask, outdoors when feasible) options or virtual options depending on the learner’s access to and ability to use the internet.

Become a Mentor & Impact a Woman's Life TODAY!
Women who grew up in foster care rarely have anyone they can turn to for support and guidance. Many navigate the world without the skills, knowledge, or guidance that most of us received growing up at home. The adversities our population has faced vary from being unhoused, incarcerated, and/or survivors of gender-based violence. For some, their adversity has made them stronger. 50/50 Leadership offers a series of financial literacy workshops called Money 101 that provide a basic set of financial skills for managing money. Upon completion of Money 101, we offer our members the opportunity to enroll in a 9-month mentorship relationship to help further their ability to stay on track and to reach their desired goals. You do not need to be a financial expert - while mentees may be looking for accountability in budgeting, if you have had some success managing your own finances over time, we encourage you to apply. We ask that our mentors are at least 30 years old. We will provide training and resources for our mentors. Mentors are expected to complete an activity log after each session with a mentee. The time commitment is no more than 2 hours per month, and one 90-minute training session annually. This is your opportunity to make a very real difference in a woman’s life. This is an opportunity to listen compassionately, offer guidance and cheer them on. You will be an accountability partner to a woman who needs your support. 50/50 Leadership was founded in 2004 to promote women’s equal leadership. Women are half the population; our vision is that they be half the leaders. Money 101 is our financial literacy program for women who did not receive basic money management skills growing up. Many of them grew up in foster care, some are unhoused, formerly incarcerated, and/or survivors of gender-based violence. Although this is a very basic course, a solid understanding of personal finance and money management are needed. This includes knowing the difference between banks and credit unions; budgeting and goal setting; how to save; the ins and outs of credit - when to use it, and how to clean it up. We particularly appreciate if you have a story of coming through adversity to success. What is not basic about this course is that these women have lived through much trauma and present their own challenges so a great deal of compassion is needed. If you can adapt on your feet, be 100% non-judgmental, and truly open to wanting to give these women the skills and knowledge for them to build a financial foundation for their lives, this will be a very rich and rewarding opportunity for you. The workshops are on zoom, there is ample training and you are always partnered with another facilitator. We offer social and educational sessions by phone and video. We're looking for volunteers to facilitate our 30-minute COFFEE TALK session on Wednesdays at 10:30 am - 11:00 am Central Standard Time (CST). The time commitment is about an hour, from 10:15 am-11:15 am CST to account for pre and post-session tasks. If every Wednesday is too much of a commitment, we can create a rotational schedule . Coffee Talk is a conversational session. We offer social and educational sessions by phone and video. We're looking for volunteers to facilitate our 30-minute BRAIN AEROBICS session on Fridays at 1:00 pm-1:30 pm Central Standard Time (CST). The RAMP TMmodel uses a combination of group, peer, and one-on-one mentoring to promote the successful transition of RAMP TMyouth to employment, continued learning opportunities, and independent living. Youth participate in weekly career preparation-focused group meetings, including peer-supported goal setting and exploration of careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Each youth meets regularly one-on-one with a mentor to develop and implement an Individualized Mentoring Plan (IMP). Mentors are caring adults recruited from the community, schools, employers, and partner organizations. Youths’ families, teachers, and support network are engaged in career fairs, college visits, and extended learning activities. Our organization focuses on news about making the world a better place, particularly news related to topics such as global poverty, philanthropy, climate change, voluntarism and human rights. The marketing volunteer usually does a mix of the following: 1) Research potential nonprofits that would be a good match for our website. Make Toys for Shelter Animals

Project Canis helps cats and dogs in Florida shelters by making and donating pet toys made from recycled materials. Many animal shelters struggle to get donations and are not financially able to provide toys, which are essential to animals' emotional and physical well-being. Anyone can participate in Project Canis remotely by sending in toys they made individually or as a service project with their organization. We have three toy designs: the braid, the plushie, and the crunch that can be made easily with recycled materials such as old t-shirts and plastic water bottles. Volunteer Oral History Interviewer - Neighborhood Stories Project
The Neighborhood Stories Project is a storytelling initiative by the NYC Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS) with the mission of recording the memories of New York City residents through a series of oral history interviews. These interviews will be preserved in perpetuity at DORIS - connecting local history with the records of City government maintained in the collections of the Municipal Archives and Library. The interviews will reflect people’s unique experiences of life in New York City and will be available for researchers, teachers, students, activists, and residents interested in discovering the history of their city from the perspective of its community members. We are looking for volunteers to interview participants for the Neighborhood Stories Project. Volunteers will interview participants about their lives and communities in New York City. Once recorded, the interview is preserved in perpetuity at the Municipal Archives with the goal of documenting the personal histories of local residents and changes in their communities from a personal perspective. Interviewers should have access to a phone (including landline), computer, or the internet. Volunteers can also assist the project in recruiting other participants in their families and communities by spreading the word about the Neighborhood Stories project and sharing informational materials (which can be provided). Volunteers will primarily serve remotely but there are also opportunities to conduct in-person interviews at partner locations and participate in community outreach events as an ambassador for the project.
