The Anixter Center is seeking volunteer tutors for our adult literacy program! Volunteers would be expected to complete approximately fourteen hours of online training on being a literacy tutor and working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Once training is complete we ask that volunteers commit to one hour a week of one-on-one tutoring for a minimum of three months but we would of course prefer that they stick around longer! We currently have in person (socially distanced, wearing a mask, outdoors when feasible) options or virtual options depending on the learner’s access to and ability to use the internet.

The Ready to Achieve Mentoring Program (RAMP) TMis a high-tech, career-focused mentoring program for youth involved with or at risk of becoming involved with the juvenile justice system. Funded by two grants from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and led by the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL), RAMP TMis being implemented across the country by state and local organizations with expertise in mentoring, youth development, juvenile justice, and disability. The RAMP TMmodel uses a combination of group, peer, and one-on-one mentoring to promote the successful transition of RAMP TMyouth to employment, continued learning opportunities, and independent living. Youth participate in weekly career preparation-focused group meetings, including peer-supported goal setting and exploration of careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Each youth meets regularly one-on-one with a mentor to develop and implement an Individualized Mentoring Plan (IMP). Mentors are caring adults recruited from the community, schools, employers, and partner organizations. Youths’ families, teachers, and support network are engaged in career fairs, college visits, and extended learning activities. At the end of the program, each group of youth works with an industry advisor to complete a high-tech project. While in RAMP TM, youth have the opportunity to assess and explore their own career interests; develop a plan and set goals for their transition; create a resource map of their community’s high-tech industries; gain workplace soft skills; build resume-writing and interviewing skills; interact with employers and experience a variety of work settings; give and receive peer support; take advantage of group and personal leadership opportunities; design and build a high-tech-related team project, and most importantly... have fun! Mentors attend weekly RAMP sessions to work with youth in both group and one-on-one activities. Typical sessions are 1-1.5 hours in length, during or afterschool, at participating high schools.

Project Canis helps cats and dogs in Florida shelters by making and donating pet toys made from recycled materials. Our community of volunteers has created a series of novel and engaging story-based mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with English-speaking students, including in a randomized controlled trial. We now want to expand the reach of these lessons by translating them into Hindi , in order to make them as accessible as possible to learners who have Hindi as a native language. This language is a particular focus for Oppia because we already have evidence that students who speak it would like to use our lessons, but have difficulty doing so because of the lack of translations. We are therefore seeking fluent or native-level speakers of Hindi to help with translating the lessons. Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. Volunteer Oral History Interviewer - Neighborhood Stories Project
The Neighborhood Stories Project is a storytelling initiative by the NYC Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS) with the mission of recording the memories of New York City residents through a series of oral history interviews. These interviews will be preserved in perpetuity at DORIS - connecting local history with the records of City government maintained in the collections of the Municipal Archives and Library. The interviews will reflect people’s unique experiences of life in New York City and will be available for researchers, teachers, students, activists, and residents interested in discovering the history of their city from the perspective of its community members. We are looking for volunteers to interview participants for the Neighborhood Stories Project. Volunteers will interview participants about their lives and communities in New York City. Once recorded, the interview is preserved in perpetuity at the Municipal Archives with the goal of documenting the personal histories of local residents and changes in their communities from a personal perspective. Interviewers should have access to a phone (including landline), computer, or the internet. Volunteers can also assist the project in recruiting other participants in their families and communities by spreading the word about the Neighborhood Stories project and sharing informational materials (which can be provided). Virtual Literacy Tutoring

Program Details and Next Steps: We are looking for individuals who can commit to volunteering weekly for 30-45 minutes at a time. All of our literacy tutoring programs operate within the window of 4-7pm from Monday to Thursday with a variety of start times in that range. Consistency has shown to make a huge impact on our students' literacy and confidence, so please make sure you are able to attend each week. All of our tutoring programs have students and tutors meet one-on-one via Zoom to read together and engage in literacy games and activities. The tasks involve standing and repetitive arm movements but is fast, fun, and rewarding. Volunteers commit to a shift on the same day each week, Monday-Friday, from 10:45am-1:45pm. Volunteers enjoy a free lunch, the comradery of other volunteers and staff, and the good feeling of relieving senior food insecurity - without having to deliver meals. Do you think that they need an advocate to make sure that happens?Then look no further! Become an Ombudsman Volunteer Associate and be an advocate for the residents. Ombudsman volunteers are the eyes and ears in making sure residents are receiving quality care and have a great quality of life. Our volunteers inform residents and families about resident rights and provide a voice for residents if there are concerns regarding their care and treatment. This is done by also assisting our staff in investigating the complaints and being the advocate for change. Volunteers can also assist with our services including: working with resident and family councils; helping people select a provider; helping to educate the community about our program, services, and volunteer opportunities; and other projects We have free certification training (in-person or virtual) which includes classroom work, self-study exercises, and shadowing opportunities. After the certification exam, we ask for at least 4 hours of service a month and to obtain continuing education which will be provided by our office. ***We are not able to fill court-ordered community service requests at this time.*** Volunteer with us and help us support this part of your community!
