Help kids make the grade! Volunteer as a tutor at the Rincon branch of the Livermore Library!

Make a difference in a student’s life! Volunteer as a Homework Coach or Reading Coach for 2 to 3 hours per week at the Rincon Branch of the Livermore Public Library. Homework and Reading Coaches work one-on-one with students to promote learning, offer encouragement, and build beneficial habits for success in school. Volunteer Homework Coaches assist students with homework in the Homework Help Center during the school year. The Homework Help Center is open during these times: Tuesdays & Thursdays: 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Wednesdays: 2:00 - 4:00 p.m Volunteer Reading Coaches support reading practice and building reading skills when the Summer Reading Bridge replaces the Homework Help Center for the summer. All Volunteer Coaches must be 18 years of age or older. Applicants must pass a City of Livermore DOJ background check and undergo Live Scan fingerprinting.

Can you see yourself helping an adult learn to read a medicine label, fill out a job application, write a letter, or study for the driver’s license exam? If so, become a volunteer tutor and help an adult improve their basic reading and writing skills and achieve their goals. No previous experience is necessary.After successfully completing training, volunteers are paired with an adult learner. Pairs typically meet once or twice weekly for one to two hours each meeting. The results are positively life-changing for an adult who has struggled, and you’ll likely be amazed at what you learn along the way! Qualifications: Desire to help someone else Comfortable reading, writing and speaking in English Flexible, friendly, patient, optimistic and dependable Over 18 years old and able to commit six months

Provide a valuable opportunity for English language learners to practice conversation skills

Interested in supporting community members who are learning English? Become a volunteer conversation group facilitator and provide a valuable opportunity for English language learners to practice conversation skills. Volunteers meet once a week with small groups of adults of various levels to practice and enhance listening, understanding, and speaking skills in an encouraging and supportive environment. Participants become more confident and feel better prepared to interact in everyday situations, such as talking with a doctor, a child’s teacher or neighbor, or preparing for a job interview. Additional benefits include an increased sense of community belonging for everyone involved, including the volunteer! Long-time volunteer, Diana, shares, "It’s an opportunity for lifelong learning - for learners and for volunteers - we’re doing it together. You meet wonderful people, a diverse group of friends from all over the world. And it’s fun! Volunteering as a Literacy Tutor at the beautiful Livermore Public Library was an absolutely wonderful experience. During training, I made a lot of friends, and felt ready to work with an adult learner. During my tutoring period, I really felt like I was making a difference in my adult learner's life. Carey, the Literary Coordinator, is a bright ray of sunshine, and it was an absolute pleasure to work with her. I would recommend this opportunity to absolutely everyone. It's incredibly rewarding.
