Mission Statement

Breaking The Cycle uses mountain biking as a fun way to bring positive role models, environmental education and activities into the lives of teens recovering from alcohol or substance abuse. Being successful at mountain biking shows them that they can make constructive changes in their own lives, and the skills and perspective they gain give them a firm foundation for overcoming adversity.

Description

Breaking The Cycle is a free program that takes teenagers in recovery from alcohol and substance abuse on mountain bike rides on wooded trails in the greater Hartford, Connecticut area. All of the Ride Leaders have their own experience with recovery from alcohol and substance abuse, and the program is based on the concept that nobody can talk to these teens like someone who has been there. At the end of the season, the teens who have stuck with the program get to keep the bikes and the gear, taking with them skills and experience, as well as a network of others who have chosen a positive lifestyle. Teens also have the opportunity to come back the following season in a leadership role as volunteers, or work their way up to become a Ride Leader.
