Mission Statement

The Santa Cruz County Outdoor Science School promotes the intellectual and social growth of students region-wide through a hands-on immersion program that enhances one's knowledge of the natural sciences, appreciation for the local environment, and sense of community.

Description

Sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Office of Education and located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the Outdoor Science School offers a week-long, hands-on immersion program in the natural sciences for 5 th and 6 th graders. Last year 68 elementary schools, 4,458 students and 507 Cabin Leaders attended the Outdoor Science School. During each program, high school students volunteer as Cabin Leaders and supervise a group of 10-12 students - assisting with activities and on-trail instruction and staying in a cabin with students overnight. Cabin Leaders can earn up to 60 community service hours for one week of service. Before students arrive all volunteers participate in Cabin Leader Training - a 10 hour on-site orientation and training that includes Leadership and Risk Management. The Santa Cruz County Outdoor Science School is proud to be celebrating it's 44th year of programming!
