Fresh Start Horse Rescue
Fresh Start Horse Rescue an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located on 40 acres of pinon-juniper woods and pastureland in Montezuma County, Colorado. It first incorporated as a Colorado nonprofit corporation in September, 2006 and received 501(c)(3) status in October, 2008. Its founders have been rescuing horses since 2005. Horses arrive at Fresh Start from neglect situations, through purchase from the livestock auction, purchase from slaughter buyers, donation, and surrender by loving owners who can no longer care for them. The facility's capacity is 25 horses. Each new horse that arrives is quarantined for a period of time while its health and individual needs are assessed. They are vaccinated, dewormed and trimmed. Stallions are gelded. Fresh Start volunteers use natural horsemanship techniques for gentling and resocializing traumatized horses. Hospice care is provided for terminal horses. Fresh Start seeks to form lifetime partnerships between the horses and their new owners. With this in mind, potential adoptive owners must visit the facility several times and interact with their chosen horse before the adoption is approved. They must also sign an adoption agreement, provide references, and agree to a site visit and follow-up calls and/or visits from Fresh Start volunteers. Fresh Start also provides opportunities for volunteering and horse sponsorship, which is a directed monthly donation to support a specific horse.
Our mission is to provide a fresh start for horses that are abused, neglected, or unwanted by rescue, rehabilitation and placement in new, loving homes; and to address issues concerning unwanted horses through education, action and outreach.
