YFU advances intercultural understanding, mutual respect and social responsibility through educational exchanges for youth, families and communities.

Description

Youth For Understanding offers youth exchange programs, students ages 15-19 from around the world live with a volunteer host family, immerse themselves in the local culture and form friendships that bring countries together. As these young people discover new worlds and become part of a community in another country, they not only learn about another culture and language, they also gain perspective on the world and develop a stronger sense of self.

YFU USA volunteers are typically the primary YFU contact within the community. Volunteers support students, families, programs, and other volunteers in a wide variety of ways. From conducting student orientations to making classroom presentations, problem solving with international students and their host families to arranging social activities, there is truly a place for everyone with YFU USA. Whether you are a returned exchange alumnus, a parent, a retired person, or a college student - we welcome people of all backgrounds to work with us. Whatever your skills and interests are, there is a volunteer opportunity to match them!

As an alumni and volunteer, I can attest to the positive aspects of the YFU organization. We live in a global society, and YFU offers families and students from around the world an opportunity to make a difference; whether that is hosting one student at a time, or sending your own child overseas to study in a foreign land that will become like a second home. This organization has been a positive influence to thousands of students and families globally, forging friendships and ties that last decades.

I love the mission of bringing different cultures together, learning more about other people and ideas. YFU is very supportive and flexible, providing you the opportunity to contribute what you want, without feeling overburdened. They are a great team helping you feel involved and that you are making a difference. Often, the kids remain connected to you and are a part of your life the rest of your life, just as if they were your own children. YFU has been a wonderful experience for me.
