Mission Statement

Literacy Minnesota is the only statewide, nonprofit, volunteer literacy organization in Minnesota. As a leader and advocate for literacy, Literacy Minnesota provides a variety of cost-effective literacy-based services designed to help achieve the personal, educational and economic goals of Minnesotans.

Description

Founded in 1972, Literacy Minnesota is Minnesota's only non-profit, volunteer-based, education provider that operates statewide. Through a network of over 100 community and school-based programs, we provide free classes for individuals lacking the most basic reading, writing and English-speaking skills. We serve both native-born Americans and refugees and immigrants.

I have been volunteering here for 8 years. I love it! Great organization, great people to work with. The Volunteer Coordinators are friendly and helpful. The students are awesome, hard working and appreciative of the time that is spent with them. I highly recommend!

Minnesota Literacy Council is wonderful! They are very well organized and take care of their volunteers. There is a 3 day class that is required in order to teach, but it is very worth it. Each class is very well put together and leaves a lot of wiggle room to get creative with the students. All my students were wonderful too, such great people! When they found out we were moving out of state, they were so sweet. One brought in a cake and we had a small going away party. 10/10 would volunteer here again! Open Door Northeast rocks! :)

Everyone at MLC is incredibly friendly, and the services they offer are outstanding! Volunteering is easy, and the people at MLC make their volunteers feel like they're actually contributing something and are important, instead of just another face. It's a great organization!
