Join We Are Family staff and other volunteers to visit with seniors in their homes at this monthly Saturday event! We will meet up at a central location in Northwest DC, and after a brief orientation volunteers will be sent out in pairs or family units to visit with some of the many seniors we serve in surrounding neighborhoods. We work with over 1,000 seniors annually, and many of them are very isolated and have limited opportunity to interact with others. They have seen so much and have amazing stories and experiences to share. Spend a few hours of your weekend to help brighten the lives of your senior neighbors in DC! You may meet a senior you really connect with, and there is always the possibility to visit with that same person again. Space is limited for these events.

We Are Family coordinates monthly grocery deliveries to over 1,000 seniors in the Shaw and Columbia Heights/Park View neighborhoods. We need your help to make this happen! Each volunteer is assigned a food pick-up time to pick up pre-assembled bags of food. Volunteers then go out to deliver the food to seniors' homes. These seniors are facing poverty and social isolation that puts them at risk for hunger as well as other dangers. These deliveries are scheduled at the time in the month where their financial assistance is running low and they are likely facing tough choices like whether to keep their power on, pay for medicine, or feed themselves. With the current economic problems many seniors are getting less support and are facing higher costs, furthering their desperation. You can help make an immense difference in their lives!

This is a great way to spend time with an individual senior on a schedule that works for you! We work with over 1,000 seniors annually, and many of them are very isolated and have limited opportunity to interact with others. They have seen so much and have amazing stories and experiences to share. We will introduce you to a senior, and then you will have the responsibility of scheduling at least one visit with them each month (more if possible). Our hope is that you will build a friendship that continues over the course of months, or even longer! Many of our seniors live in the core Northwest DC neighborhoods of Petworth, Columbia Heights, Shaw, and Mount Vernon Square, but it may be possible to connect with a senior in another neighborhood that's convenient for you.

We Are Family reaches out with services, advocacy, and companionship to isolated, low-income seniors in the Shaw, Columbia Heights, Petworth and Adams Morgan areas of Washington, DC, using a volunteer-driven model, grounded in grassroots senior leadership.
Description
We Are Family serves seniors in the Shaw, Columbia Heights, Petworth, and Adams Morgan neighborhoods of Washington, DC. We bring advocacy, services, organizing, and companionship into the homes of the elderly, while helping to build friendships across boundaries like race, class, religion, age, culture, and sexual orientation.
Most of our work is done by volunteers. While many of those who help do the work of We Are Family are seniors themselves -- who, after all, have built this community -- *we need you as well.*
