Description
Redeem Detroit was started in 2009 by a Detroit Public Schools math teacher who wanted to do more to help his students and their families. In the beginning the organization aimed to help students stay in school by peaking their interest in math by introducing real world math problems with hands on vocational projects including construction, and auto mechanics. The students loved it so much that their family members were inquiring how to learn the skills, and soon we started classes to accommodate the other demographics. Since 2009 we have put many students and their families through our Vocational Interest Program and many have become employed and even new homeowners. In 2014, the organization won the channel 7 (WXYZ) community Act Award for turning an old abandoned hardware store into a garage to help our participants learn automechanics. Redeem has revitalized the Gratiot/Conner neighborhood with its many programs and presence in the community.
