Friends of the Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery

Our newly formed volunteer Board has taken responsibility for overseeing this very special cemetery, which was abandoned and neglected for quite some time. The cemetery which was created in 1829 lies on historic grounds which were first inhabited by the Lenni Lanape indians, and later was a battlefied in an important Revolutionary War battle in Oct. 1780 led by General Lafayette. Our cemetery also became famous as "The Soprano Cemetery", as the filming site for funeral scenes on the HBO hit series "The Sopranos". We have a monumental task ahead of us to restore the cemetery grounds, and the caretaker house. There is very little money and equipment, and the cemetery files are in disarray. Our goal is to identify all the graves, create a database, restore and maintain the grounds, restore the caretaker house into a working office and a historic museum gallery, and acquire state and national landmark presrevation status. Please help us achieve this mission!!

Mission Statement

To Protect and Preserve our historic cemetery, rich in early native American and Revolutionary War history. To lay the groundwork to ensure it's appropriate maintenance and preservation for years and years to come.
