Mission Statement

To preserve, protect and restore the natural and cultural resources present within Michigan State Parks for this and future generations.

Description

Volunteers will help steward natural areas (woodlands, wetlands, prairies, etc.) within Michigan state parks and recreation areas. These efforts will help protect entire ecosystems as well as individual species - especially those in greatest need of conservation ("Species of Special Concern" and those whose populations are "Threatened" or "Endangered").

Currently, Core Volunteer Stewards are volunteering at monthly volunteer workdays on weekends at 7 southeast Michigan parks and recreation areas. Volunteers do a variety of activities throughout the year including: removing invasive non-native plants, collecting seed from native plants, and planting native seedlings. Volunteers can also participate in a number of Individual Projects like Insect Monitoring, Photographic Monitoring and Invasive Plant Mapping - to name a few.

No previous experience is need to participate, though some training might be necessary for certain projects.

This is a good way to get outside and enjoy the parks while helping out and learning about invasive species with a good group of people. It was difficult for me to identify some of the shrubs and would take some practice to do it well, but you can easily team up with someone who knows what they're doing.

It was fun, different and helpful. Learn a lot of cool scientific and historical stuff! Nice group to work with too. Mosquitoes not so nice....

I like to see the community in which we live look nice, and grow to it's full potential. The community/environment can shape a person's health, and sculpt their perspective on life. I believe that all natural resources for the environment matter, because we need them to live, and to prosper.
