COmmunity LIteracy PROgram (COLIPRO) is Universidad Popular's literacy program. It serves as an umbrella program for all other educational projects that those who work with UP develop. COLIPRO emphasizes UP's participatory methodology of education with, by and for the community by creating educational projects which help community residents empower themselves, their families, and their communities. To do this, UP's volunteers and staff work together with participants to help make this slow, somewhat daunting education and empowerment process less difficult. At the same time, UP staff and volunteers learn with and from participatns, thus becoming participants themselves. Three important parts of COLIPRO are English Language Development classes, Life-Skills Seminars and the Program Advisory Committee.
Mission Statement
Universidad Popular's mission is community empowerment via the praxis of participatory learning or popular education; Universidad Popular (UP) has become known as a place where community residents come to learn with, by and from one another.
At UP, literacy is the ability to read the community and society we live in; it is preparing its students to read and rewrite the world that surround us by taking an active part in the changes necessary to benefit ourselves, our family and our community.The Details
