Mission Statement

The African Community Center (ACC) was started in 2003 as a refugee resettlement branch office of the Ethiopian Community Development Council, Inc. (ECDC).

We are a 501c3 community organizaion which aids in the relocation and placement of refugees granted legal living status here in the United States.

Our mission is to welcome refugees who have fled persecution in thier home countries and to help them start thier new lives in the United States. The ACC of Las Vegas is dedicated to helping our new refugee citizens to develop productive, happy, sustainable lives here in Southern Nevada.

Description

Refugees are faced with many challenges when they arrive in Las Vegas. There are language barriers, little prior knowledge of the culture and fast pace life that the U.S. holds, and sometimes no relevant job history or skills. Our goals are to help these families become self-suffieicent and active members of the Las Vegas Community.

ACC Services include:

-Providing short-term basic needs, case management, and housing assistance

-cultural and community orientation

-employment services to support newcomer's efforts to become self-sufficient as quickly as possible;

-family reunification

Very rewarding experience...the ethnic and cultural diversity is something that is Integral aspect of opening ones eyes to the true essence and social environment which is overshadowed by the sights and sounds of Vegas. Worked in admin/finance and was a small part of the larger task at hand, in ensuring accuracy and effectiveness of record/bookkeeping. Thank you ecdc!

This is a great an opportunity for college students in nursing, or in social studies. You can gain real hands on experience with helping these Immigrants, Asylees and Refugees here in Las Vegas, NV. Just volunteering a few hours in a week will make your resume more attractive.

The African Community Center in Las Vegas isn't very well known but has been serving refugee needs in Southern Nevada since 2003. The organization recently celebrated World Refugee Day and had a wonderful local community turn out! I would recommend volunteering for the ACC if you want to learn more about refugees, ethnic diversity, and other cultures.
