Mission Statement

Socialization is a vital part of our well being, whether we are growing up or growing old. The Guardian Angels program provides this essential element by pairing San Diegans with isolated seniors living in residential facilities. Many have outlived their friends and family or currently live far from loved ones. Our volunteers also are eager to connect with an older adult, filling voids in their relationships, their resumes and their weekly schedules. Be an 'Angel’ to someone and improve your own well-being. Description

The Guardian Angels Program (GA) was organized by San Diego County Supervisors Dianne Jacobs and Pam Slater-Price to reduce the isolation of elderly residents residing in long-term care facilities.

Since 2001, the Glenner Memory Care Centers have supported and overseen the growth of the GA program. To date the Guardian Angels program has more than 150 service sites and some 150 active volunteers located in San Diego’s North County, East County, central San Diego and South Bay. In partnership with the Glenner Memory Care Centers, we strive not only to eliminate senior isolation, but to also educate the community on topics related to seniors and aging.

Guardian Angels’ volunteers understand the importance of socializing with seniors, especially those isolated in skilled nursing homes, assisted living facilities, convalescent centers, senior homes and memory care centers throughout San Diego County. Through their stories we learn of where we’ve been and where we’re going, in sitting with them we learn patience, in communicating with them we learn how to listen, and by simply visiting with them we learn about ourselves.

It is the hope of the GA Program, that for every countless senior living in a residential care facility that sends out a silent cry for a friend there will be a Guardian Angel volunteer that answers that cry.

The Guardian Angels Program is funded through a grant from the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency, Aging & Independence Services (A.I.S.)

This program is for 16 and older only, and we do ask that under 18 have legal guardian signatures on the Livescan forms that are required by each volunteer for background check purposes, and also each volunteer would need to get a TB Test.
