Are you The Friend Who Fixes Things? Squeaky chairs, sticky doors, leaky faucets, setting up a portable a/c unit - do those words evoke an "I can help" response in you? You may find great fulfillment in joining our volunteer team. Wider Horizons members are dedicated to living in our community and building interdependence. As the years go by, little repairs that we used to take for granted get harder to tackle. With your help now and then, we can continue to thrive in our homes safely and comfortably, and in turn give back to the community we share. As a Minor Home Repair Helper volunteer you receive fix-it assignments as they are requested by Wider Horizons' members, essentially "on-call" to respond when needs arise. Just about all of our members live in Central Seattle, with the majority in Capitol Hill neighborhoods. Volunteers may need to supply/utilize some or all of their own tools. Village members are responsible for the cost of any parts or non-tool supplies. Volunteers are not required to be bonded and licensed, but such certification is welcomed. Wider Horizons volunteers must successfully complete an application, background check, and interview.

Health Care Advocate

Health Care Advocacy Involves getting to know one of our members (people 40-90 living in their own homes and "aging in community") who have an ongoing or time-limited health issue. It may also involve any or all of the following: 1. Going to doctor appointments, possibly providing transportation 2. Taking notes at doctor visits or elsewhere 3. Reviewing the appointment with the member afterwards 4. Accompanying the member to surgery 5. Visiting the member in the hospital or skilled nursing facility afterwards 6. Advocating with health care professionals to assure high quality care 7. Making sure the member is listened to and included by the caring professionals 8. Participating in training as needed or desired

Technology assistance

We are a membership organization of about 120 people who want to age well, together, in community with each other. Our members need frequent assistance with their tech: computers, phones, modems, etc. That can be done over the phone or in person--often the latter. Our members live in Central Seattle, including Queen Anne to the west and Seward Park and Columbia City to the south. We've had a single devoted volunteer for the past 5 years and we are losing her but she is available for training a new person or persons.

Wider Horizons' mission is to enable older residents of Central Seattle to participate in an intergenerational community that shares knowledge, experience and services with each other so living is easier and more joyful.

Wider Horizons does this by providing, vetting, and recommending resources to adults so they can remain in their own homes for as along as they choose. We offer members a harmonious blend of health and in-home services, shared social and cultural activities, and community engagement--all designed to foster belonging, security and contribution.
