In addition to classroom based education on Mondays and Wednesdays, LSI encourages our senior refugee clients to attend the Central Senior Center on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. They gather for crafts, games, informal learning times, and also utilize the wonderful spaces in the building (billiards, a computer lab, craft room, and exercise room). Volunteers are needed to lead and support these activities to foster engagement and social bonds between clients. Our ESL Activities Specialist will provide support which will enable you to comfortably interact with our clients. Time Commitment: Hours are flexible. Once each month, LSI distributes a box of culturally appropriate food to participants in our program supporting older refugees to help reduce food insecurity by providing food that people are used to eating and comfortable preparing. Volunteers help package and deliver the boxes to participants throughout Des Moines. This generally happens over the course of two days in the third week of the month. Driving volunteers must complete background checks, orientation, and give a copy of driver's license and insurance before driving. For more information about next month's schedule, contact volunteer@lsiowa.org. LSI’s Global Greens agricultural programs coordinate land access, production education and business development training for refugees in the Des Moines metro who want to reconnect with the land. Some refugee families want to grow food for home consumption. Thanks to partnerships with the City of Des Moines, community organizations and private landowners, we help connect refugee families to small garden plots near their homes. Volunteer support expands staff capacity to support gardeners' success. Currently the greatest need is to fill water tanks at urban gardens near the zoo, Drake neighborhood, and near the fairgrounds weekly so gardeners have water for their plots. If you can get to at least one of those locations weekly, we'd appreciate your help filling the water tanks! Once trained by staff, schedule is flexible and volunteers can help at a time that is convenient to them.
