Mission Statement

Our mission is to preserve and make known the history of the Great Lakes. This mission is accomplished by operating the National Museum of the Great Lakes and Col James M. SchoonmakerMuseum Ship, publishing the award winning journal Inland Seas; Maintaining the research collection of the Clarence S. Metcalf Great Lakes Maritime Research Library; Conducting underwater archaeological research through the Peachman Lake Erie Research center; and offering educational programs throughout the Great Lakes Region.

Description

The National Museum of the Great Lakes is a new museum in Toledo, Ohio which opened in the spring of 2014. The parent organization is the Great Lakes Historical Society (GLHS) GLHS was founded almost 50 years ago. By opening the brand new museum and taking over operations of the museum ship Col. James M. Schoonmaker, the organization has entered into a new level of prominence and unprecedented expansion. There are many volunteer opportunities to help create a memorable visitor experience.
