Airmid Theatre Company

Founded in 2000, Airmid Theatre Company is dedicated to researching, preserving, and producing classic works by women. The company, whose mission is shared by no other producer in the world and currently draws guests from around the region and beyond, is in the midst of creating a new Research, Education, Library, and Theatre Complex on Long Island. This unique theatrical presentation, arts-in-education activities, and academic research, will create a cultural hub and employment opportunities, foster local tourism, and provide a new economic stimulus for the broader community while enhancing the quality of life in the greater Long Island region.

Productions--including an outdoor summer festival in 2009, family shows, world premiers, revivals, and translations--form the backbone of the company's artistic endeavors. Educational, research, and recovery programs focused on arts-in-education and the humanities add to the broader scope of the company's work. Professional development programs for teachers and in-school master artist training programs round out the arts-in-education component.

Airmid's unique programming sets it apart from other theatrical producers in many ways. A scholars' advisory council of male and female researchers and professors from around the USA and internationally participate in, and support our recovery, translation, collection, and production of works of literature that have not been seen in the USA or, in many cases anywhere, in centuries. Additionally, specialty programs with universities, including women's studies, business schools, and theatre training programs provide real world experience to students, and professional work to academics wishing to maintain their professional credits.

Airmid fills an essential void in the arts, academic, and educational communities. Through the production of little known plays by women and performed by male and females artists as intented by the playwrights, Airmid spotlights women's contribution in all periods of theatrical, literary, and social history. Airmid uses these texts with universal themes, which date back to the tenth century, to illuminate our own experiences from the point of view of women providing an opportunity for an understanding of, and expanded discourse on, issues relating to society and gender.

Airmid's programming, and the new theatrical complex creates an economic tourism destination on Long Island, bringing focus to a part of the downstate area where there is a struggle to retain businesses and workers to maintain diversity and sustainability.

Mission Statement

The Airmid Theatre Company produces classic works by women. With these plays at the heart of its mission, the company creates a safe home for women theatre artists, and ignites broad public recognition of the essential contribution women have made to the worlds of theatre, dramatic literature and society.

Airmid aims to: Produce performances of significant dramatic works written by women throughout history; Commission translations of non-English classic works of theatre by women; Engage in the ongoing research and recovery of classic plays by women; Mentor emerging female theatre practitioners; Expand the dramatic canon of works by women for study and production.

Unique in its mission, Airmid's fresh perspective on these forgotten works reminds us that there is a long, rich theatrical history that has been lost. By establishing the history of playwriting by women and professionally producing their work with actors of both genders as the playwrights intended, we open the door to broader discussion on women's roles today, and in the future.
