With citizen involvement, the Rivanna and its tributaries can be protected so that our children and their children can benefit from the wealth and beauty of our river.

Rapid population growth and development are profoundly affecting the Rivanna River and its tributaries. According the Dept. of Environmental Quality, between the years 1996 and 2000 the number of impaired stream miles in the watershed increased by 90%. This figure may not accurately describe the full extent of degradation, for government agencies don't have the capacity to conduct comprehensive stream monitoring, and no communtiy based monitoring program exists in the Rivanna basin. StreamWatch aims to fill this gap.
