Every 8 minutes the American Red Cross responds to a disaster. Our Disaster Action Team (DAT) provide 24-hour emergency response to local disasters, such as home fires. We are looking for compassionate people to respond as soon as possible when the dispatch call comes in. DAT responders will: Go to the scene of a disaster to meet with and participate in the interview of those affected ("clients") Help clients feel that the Red Cross cares and can help them begin their recovery Provide access to resources for necessities (like lost medications, shelter, food, mental health and spiritual care support, and/or financial assistance, when eligible) Experiences you may be exposed to: Fire department activity Noise, water, smoke, smell, ash, etc. Possibly distraught clients Injured or hospitalized people or pets We encourage volunteers to sign up for at least 2 on-call shifts a month. On-call shifts are 6 hours in length. You may or may not be called to respond during that time. Please reach out if you have any questions about this rewarding volunteer opportunity!

If you answered yes to these questions, then the role of Disaster Action Team (DAT) Duty Officer might be something that interests you. DAT Duty Officers are the lynchpin that holds a Red Cross disaster response together. DAT Duty Officers receive notification from clients and agencies requesting assistance during a fire, flood, or other disaster. They assess the situation and determine eligibility, then deploy the most appropriate resources to provide immediate assistance and damage assessment, initiate recovery planning and health and wellness services. The DAT Duty Officer ensures the response team has the tools, knowledge, and resources they need in order to deliver quality services, all while monitoring the situation and providing support from the comfort of their own home. We offer extensive training and mentorship from experienced volunteer leadership to set you up for success in this essential response role. Our DAT Duty Officers are grouped by territory: Our "South" Duty Officers virtually support responses in the following counties: Santa Clara, Alameda, Merced, San Benito, Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Mateo Our "North" Duty Officers support the following counties: Sonoma, Napa, San Francisco, Marin, Solano, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Contra Costa

Red Cross Disaster Mental Health volunteers help meet the emotional needs of disaster clients. These volunteers respond to disasters of all sizes, from single family fires to large-scale events. What does the Red Cross do & what do we need? The Red Cross provides shelter, feeding, emergency supplies, health and mental support to hundreds of thousands of people affected by disasters of all sizes. We are actively recruiting new Disaster Mental health team members to provide support within your local community or during large disasters. What does a Disaster Mental Health team do? 1. Respond to the immediate emotional needs of disaster clients 2. Supplement local mental health resources during times of disasters 3. Support the community in building resilience Eligibility: a. Currently licensed mental health professionals: - At minimum, holds a Master's Degree in one of the mental health positions listed below; and - Holds a current, unencumbered license from any US state or territory as a social worker, psychologist, professional counselor, marriage or family therapist, or psychiatrist (any level license/registration, including non-clinical licenses such as Licensed Masters Social Worker or LMSW) b. Current school psychologists and school counselors: - At minimum, holds a Master's Degree in school psychology or school counseling; and - Holds a current, unexpired license or certification as a school psychologist or school counselor issued by a state board of education c. Current psychiatric nurses: - Have a state license as a registered nurse; and have a minimum of 2 years' experience working in a psychiatric setting d. Retired mental health professionals: - Held a license (any level) from any US state or territory as a social worker, psychologist, professional counselor, marriage and family therapist, psychiatric nurse or psychiatrist, or a certificate as a school psychologist or school counselor, within the 5 years prior to on-boarding - Maintained a license or certification in good standing upon retirement and without any disciplinary action taken by issuing US state or territory licensing or certification board Email Aileen.Blomdal@redcross.org or scan the QR code to register today!
