Mission Statement

Mission: We inspire young people and expand their learning through the arts.

History: Young Audiences of Oregon was founded in 1958 as a local chapter of the nation’s largest arts-in-education organization. In 1989, the Portland-based organization merged with a smaller chapter in Vancouver to become Young Audiences of Oregon & SW Washington. We have steadily grown in scope and programming, evolving from presenting only classical music performances in our early years to currently offering a full range of educational arts programming in multiple disciplines and cultures--the only arts organization in the region to do so.

Description

Young Audiences provides arts education experiences within schools in three ways: performances, residencies, and workshops:

  • A Young Audiences Performance introduces students to an art form and/or culture through demonstration, entertainment, education and audience participation.
  • A Young Audiences Residency is a sequential series of at least 3 visits by an individual artist with a classroom and is designed to help students gain proficiency in a particular art form by immersing them in a long-term creative experience.
  • Through Workshops, artists provide an introductory encounter with an art form, which can help students (classroom workshops), teachers (teacher workshops), and families (Family Arts Night workshops) become more comfortable and confident with a variety of art forms.

Young Audiences also provides professional development and training to teaching artists through its Teaching Artist Studio. This provides artists of all experience levels the opportunity to develop their skills in teaching K-12 students and in integrating the arts with other academic areas. Teaching artists do not need to be part of the Young Audiences artist roster in order to participate.

Young Audiences is also the implementation partner for The Right Brain Initiative, an in-depth, multi-year arts integration program for school districts.
