Mission Statement

Our mission is to memorialize the suffragists whose harsh treatment at the Occoquan Workhouse served as a turning point for the recognition of a woman's right to vote; and to educate, inspire, and empower present and future generations to remain vigilant in the quest for equal rights.

Description

We are an all-volunteer organization that is committed to raising funds to build a national suffragist memorial in Occoquan Regional Park near the site of the former Occoquan Workhouse, where dozens of women were held for picketing the Woodrow Wilson White House. There is currently no memorial to the suffragists who were responsible for the largest expansion of democracy this country has ever seen. Through our partnership with the Occoquan Regional Park, we not only have the site for the memorial but we also have continued maintenance once the memorial is built. Tthe design for the garden-style memorial includes 19 interactive stations which will explain the history of the suffrage movement. We now need to raise between 5-6 million dollars so that the memorial will be fully operational by the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 2020.
