Mission Statement
Mayme Clayton Library and Museum's (MCLM) Mission is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and disseminate the unique history and cultural heritage of Americans of African descent, allowing the collection to serve as a cultural compass to chart a more complete understanding of American history.
Description
Mayme Clayton Library and Museum's (MCLM) is both a musem and library. Its collection is one of the largest ever amassed by one individual and is the largest of its type west of the Mississippi. The collection includes: -20,000 rare books by or about Blacks -Original handwritten pre-Civil War documents 500 film titles -hundreds of vintage film posters and vintage movie lobby cards -9,500 sound recordings -rare sheet music -20,000 photographs dated back to mid 1800s -hundreds of items realted to Blacks in sports and of Blacks in the Old West. We have over 25,000 periodicals, 1,000 pieces of sheet music, 2,500 pamphets. We also have hundreds of items of ephemera.
