Mission Statement
Teen and Family Services (TAFS) is a recovery program for teens and families who are struggling with the devastating effects of adolescent substance abuse or other high risk behaviors. Our program combines the strengths of a positive alternative peer group and a community based recovery program with proven counseling approaches involving the entire family.
Our mission is to provide a community of support for families that protects and nurtures individual empowerment, integrity and self-worth through exceptional mental health services, after-school programming and college preparation. At Teen and Family Services we hold true to our mission by being a supportive community to promote change leading to healing, growth and future success.
Description
Our exceptional mental health services include:
- individual and family counseling
- after-school programming
- supervised weekend social activities and functions
- parent education
- various group meetings for teens and parents
- quarterly wilderness type group retreats
Our outreach program for parents and teens is open to the community and is free of charge. Our program includes meetings for those who might want to attend a 12-step meeting or who want to learn more about our program services.
Sadly, many students with substance abuse or other addictive behaviors struggle to complete their education without professional guidance. TAFS is the only non-profit in the greater Houston area that focuses on providing both recovery support services and college preparationfor adolescents involved with substance abuse. We help our students set realistic educational goals and assist them with their studies, as needed. In addition, each year we coordinate college field trip visits to help our students in their college decisions.
Teen and Family Services not only changes the lives of teens now, but also future generations as the cycle of substance abuse and high risk behaviors is broken. We give our teens the skills they need to succeed now and in the future as adults who will one day raise their own families and pursue their professional careers.
