Mission Statement

Mission Statement A Better Harrisburg through Our Children

Our Mission

The mission of the Harrisburg PAL is to provide outstanding revitalization effort especially through youth crime prevention programming and law enforcement efforts.

Our Philosophy

PAL creates relationships through:

  • Joint participation of youth, residents, and police.

  • Positive interactions focused on educational, recreational, and athletic activities.

  • Incorporation of drug and alcohol prevention, gang prevention, and illegal weapon possession intervention programs.

Our Vision

To build trust and enhance relationships between law enforcement and residents especially the youth in the neighborhoods they share in order to prevent crime and improve community safety.

Relationships will be created through traits of honor, integrity, courtesy, and respect.

Description

The 4 goals of the HPAL strategic plan established and supported by survey of the residents served are:

1) Build positive mentoring relationships between youth and police.

2) Build positive community policing relationships with the community.

3) Improve the public safety of the community through comprehensive evidence based crime prevention strategies.

4) Build inclusionary programming for youth with developmental disabilities to promote positiverelationships with Law Enforcement.

Since reestablishing the chapter after a 35 year absence earlier in 2012, the chapter has already served hundreds of youth in its weekly programming. Currently, police officers, volunteers, and resident mentors provide a 10 to 1 mentor/mentee ratio. Recruiting continues lower the ratio to 3 to 1, the accepted impact andbehavioral change ratio generally accepted.

Funding and other resources are needed to recruit additional staff, volunteers, mentors and increase the participation amongst at-risk youth to accomplish impacts of behavioral change measured in the logic models of the our
"PAL" strategic plan.

I volunteered with Lower Paxton Police for 8 years and some of my duties were working with children in classes teaching them about police work and at school during safety with bikes. At that time we were able to talk to them about right and wrong and for them to meet police officer and see what they are really like
