Description

'Horses with Wings’ is a local therapeutic riding program located in Tucson, Arizona. It was founded, and is directed, by Michelle Mastrangelo M. Ed., BCBA L-BA. Michelle is also the Lead Trainer.

Currently, we have eight amazing equine partners working with our 'Horses with Wings’ family. Cowboy, Sedona, Dynamite, Reba, Dana, Baxter, Fritz and Iceman. These wonderful miracle-working creatures, paired with our devoted and caring staff, makes for a great learning and growing environment for individuals and families.

Therapeutic Riding is a growing and widely-accepted treatment for rehabilitating a range of physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. Conditions served include: cerebral palsy, spina bifida, neuromuscular disorders, post-traumatic brain injury, autism, ADHD, and cognitive disorders. Riders experience increased self-confidence and improvement in strength, balance, coordination, attention span, language and social skills.

Ms. Mastrangelo is a member of the Professional Association the Therapeutic Horsemenship International (PATH) and working toward her Therapeutic Riding Instructor Certification. She and her staff work with very creative ways to increase communication skills, social skills along with motor development and balance of all riding participants. Each participant has specific goals and objectives developed for them that are designed to decrease their area of need and increase their strengths. Some clients are more interested in working on the ground and not riding while some clients enjoy the ground work and the riding.

It was amazing getting to work with the animals and get hands on experience at caring for horses. However at the time I volunteered it was difficult to get in touch with the coordinators outside of the initial meeting.

I drove across town and spent a couple of hours learning the chores. I explained which days and hours I would be able to help out and waited eagerly for the schedule but they NEVER called me back. No response, no explanation. I guess they really aren't in need of volunteers after all.
