Mission Statement

World Dance Fusion’s mission is to promote cultural awareness and understanding through dance.

Description

World Dance Fusion, a fiscally sponsored dance company of Dancer’s Group (a 501(c)(3) organization), presents multi-cultural dance programming throughout the year including a holiday show, The Jewish Nutcracker. The whole world’s worth of dance forms are explored in the choreography of World Dance Fusion, including Flamenco, Russian, Chinese, Persian, Kathak, Afro-Haitian, and Capoeira. World Dance Fusion creates bridges between dancers who are often trained in one dance form and develops a dance community much broader in experience than what the dancers have known in the past. Programming includes participation in San Francisco’s Carnival, the Ethnic Dance Festival, and SafeHouse for the Arts.

World Dance Fusion was first created in 1995 by Artistic Director Katy Alaniz Rous. Under the choreography of Katy, the program showcases that people from different global lineages are all related through movement. Katy studies and teaches over thirty forms of cultural dance, exposesing groups of all sizes, ages, and socio-economic stratification to a wide ranging experience. As a native San Franciscan, Katy danced in the San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker for many years, then grew her performance studies into over thirty forms of cultural dance. So, in 2008, Katy conceived of The Jewish Nutcracker. The Board of Directors was formed to strengthen The Jewish Nutcracker production. The board is comprised of all volunteers, including past dancers, family members, and members of the community.
