Mission Statement

The mission of the N.C. Coastal Reserve & National Estuarine Research Reserve is "To promote informed management and stewardship of North Carolina’s estuarine and coastal habitats through research, education, and example."

Description

The Wilmington office of NCCR and NCNERR manages the Masonboro Island, Zeke's Island, and Bird Island Reserve sites. These natural areas are three of ten sites in North Carolina that are protected to serve as examples of our state's natural and undeveloped estuarine habitats.

These sites are preserved in order to allow these coastal ecosystems to be available as natural outdoor labortories where scientists, students, and the general public can learn about coastal processes, functions, and influences that shape and sustain the coastal area.
