Educating children and youth, and strengthening families, in a bilingual, multicultural environment

Description

CentroNía is a nationally recognized, award-winning educational organization providing affordable, high-quality early childhood education; professional development to educators; and family support services to nearly 2,400 low-income children, youth, and families with programs in the District of Columbia metropolitan region.

Founded over 35 years ago, CentroNía is a multicultural learning community with a pioneering approach to bilingual education. Our holistic approach ensures that the children and families we serve receive the support and encouragement they need to succeed academically, develop a strong sense of community, and live a healthy and active life. CentroNía's services include award-winning and nationally accredited early learning programs; family support services; a school meals program that is recognized by the USDA and Michelle Obama; and out-of-school time programs that create opportunities for learning after school and over the summer.

It's an institution highly committed to children learning, they have encouraged kids to read books, and understand the readings through a quick analysis of questions. The teachers are great with kids, and the book-o-ween was very entretaining, I really had a great time!. I feel motivated to participate in the future in any activity that they organize.

It was such a wonderful experience to be able to read to the children at CentroNia! I really enjoyed being at the school surrounded by amazing teachers and children! I loved it at CentroNia and would DEFINITELY go back! Hopefully another event is soon to come, I will definitely be one of the first to sign up!

I have volunteered with CentroNía's Family Literacy Program for nearly 3 years and have nothing but great things to say about the organization. Tutoring at CentroNía is a fun, gratifying way to help out kids who are working on learning. I am always impressed by how excited the kids are to spend Saturday mornings working on academics, especially since this is an area of struggle for many of them. The one-on-one attention of the tutoring relationship clearly means a lot to the kids. And the tutors may be even more impacted than the kids are, since we get to spend time in the warm, inspiring, positive CentroNía community! If you live in the Columbia Heights - Mt. Pleasant - Petworth - U St. community (and beyond), I highly recommend volunteering. It's a great way to get more involved in our vibrant neighborhood.

I have worked at Centronía for the past two and a half years, and it has been one of the most meaningful experiences I have had. The staff is very friendly and the program is very well organized. Each tutor is paired up with a student for a semester. The tutoring sessions are once a week for two hours and even on Saturday mornings, attendance is very high. Centronía provides a great environment for learning with many educational tools and resources available and ample space for all tutor pairs. Furthermore, Centronía is one of the only institutions in Washington DC that provides programs to help parents, as well. This institution really serves the educational needs of the entire community. It has been a pleasure getting to know the staff, the other tutors, and the students who make Centronía a great place to volunteer, and I will be returning in the fall to continue tutoring!

For the last two years I have volunteered with the Family Literacy program at CentroNia and it has proven to be one of the most fulfilling and positive experiences of my life. One-on-one tutoring provides the opportunity to directly support education and to form unique bonds with individual students. For me, it has also fostered significant personal growth. The staff of the Family Literacy program consistently demonstrate their dedication to creating the best possible learning environment and always seeks to improve the program for students and volunteers. I am happy to say I am a part of the vibrant community that is CentroNia and look forward to continuing my service there.

CentroNía is a fantastic organization. I volunteered for the Saturday morning tutoring program for the first time in the fall of my senior year, liked it so much I became a team leader with DC Reads at CentroNía in the spring, and enjoyed that so much that I decided to continue working with the organization this summer at the Studio R.O.C.K.S. program. I really can't say enough about the work CentroNía does, the people that work there, the community they foster, and most of all the kids. It is a wonderful organization and I have honestly never met a single person that didn't absolutely love volunteering or working there. If you're considering volunteering in the DC area, there are lots of great organizations but none better than CentroNía.
