Mission Statement

AWP's mission is to foster literary achievement, advance the art of writing as essential to a good education, and serve the makers, teachers, students, and readers of contemporary writing.

Description

AWP provides community to thousands of individual novelists, short story writers, essayists, nonfiction writers, and poets. Henry James wrote that the essence of his craft as a writer was loneliness--more profound than discipline or genius. As it was for James, so solitude remains the home base for many writers. AWP seeks to provide a community for those pursuing our lonely art, providing support, advocacy, and a multitude of resources for the journey.

AWP also serves 550 college and university creative writing programs and 125 writers’ conferences and centers. These programs can be found in our online Guide to Creative Writing Programs and our Directory of Conferences & Centers at www.awpwriter.org.
