The San Diego River Park Foundation

Saving the San Diego River Since 2001.

The San Diego River Park Foundation is community-based grassroots non-profit organization which was founded in 2001. As a 501 (c)3 public benefit corporation, SDRPF relies upon donations and support from the community for its general operations as well as grants, both public and private.

SDRPF is not a foundation built upon an endowment or other source of funding. We are a foundation in name because we are built upon a foundation of people that have come together toward the goal of creating the San Diego River Park.

The vision of the San Diego River Park is a greenbelt from the mountains to the ocean along the 52 mile long San Diego River. This greenbelt is really a trail system and a clean and healthy river system which connects a diversity of parks, open spaces, public places and community facilities spread out along the length of the River.

The SDRPF is working to achieve this goal by partnering with government agencies, business and civic leaders and a wide range of public organizations. By promoting stewardship of the River and promoting a better understanding of the River's natural systems, the San Diego River Park Foundation is endeavoring to enhance the quality of life in San Diego.

SDRPF works with community groups and other organizations dedicated to the San Diego River and the River Park and its wildlife, recreation, water, cultural and community values to better engage the public in this project. We support projects which help to establish the river-long park such as restoring and enhancing the river, establishing public plazas and community gardens, and telling the story of the river through interpretive programs, kiosks and educational signage, and more. We also work to acquire and manage critical properties which play an important role in creating the River Park.

We are dedicated to making this project a truly treasured regional asset that is valued by all members of our community. We welcome and encourage everyone who is interested to join us in this effort.

Mission Statement

The San Diego River Park Foundation is dedicated to creating the San Diego River Park.

As the only non-governmental organization dedicated to the entire length of the River, SDRPF plays the role of an umbrella organization for many other groups.

We work to to support and empower these groups who are endeavoring to restore and enhance the San Diego River and its ecosystem, create trails and new community facilities, protect historical resources and to enhance the communities along the river.

The Foundation works to support important projects which will help to establish a river-long park while restoring and enhancing the river and its watershed, addressing flooding issues, providing greatly needed community facilities and opportunities to learn about our region's rich history, encouraging stewardship of the riparian environment, and improving the lives of those that live, work and play in the area.

Would you recommend The San Diego River Park Foundation?

I have recommended this organization already to many people who care about helping in the community and value having a clean and healthy river in their city. As a volunteer at many of the SDRPF events over the last two years, I have appreciated the enthusiasm of the staff not only for the various projects they are undertaking, but also for their volunteers whom they acknowledge as central to their work. To find out more about the SDRPF you should go to their great website that explains their vision, records their many successes to date, and outlines upcoming activities.

I have volunteered hundreds of hours with the San Diego River Park and with several other conservation groups. San Diego River Park Foundation is TOPS! They are well organized and efficient. All of their efforts go directly to helping save the River and improving public access. We have removed more than 1,000,000 pounds of trash and thousands of invasive plants. Each month, volunteer teams test water quality and survey the watershed to keep track of the improvements and warn of any emerging problems. It is a fun organization with lots of dedicated, talented and interesting people of all ages, working toward a common goal of preserving and improving the San Diego River watershed. Come join us!

I have volunteered for many projects for the River Park Foundation. Everything from their river cleanups, water testing, community gardens and restoration projects and more. The reason I keep coming back is because the projects are important and meaningful as well as fun and there is a lot of variety. The staff is always so appreciative of our work and they really have it together as far as organization and planning. The River Park people seem to really know how to host events, after all they host an average of 10 volunteer events per month. If you are looking for some great ways to give back to our environment and a chance to learn about our local ecology give the river park a try, you won't be disappointed.

I have worked with a few volunteer organizations in my life and have been most impressed with SDRPF. I am amazed at how passionate the staff is about their goal to clean up the river and surrounding areas. They work long hard hours to organize the numerous groups and events and you can tell that they all love what they do. It's truly inspiring and it keeps me coming back for more and more events with them! I most definitely recommend this organization for those of you looking to make a difference in your local community.

I have been volunteering with SDRPF at the wetland area at the SD River Mouth for the past year. This sensitive wetland is one of the last remaining areas of it's kind in the region. The project requires lots of weeding to remove invasive plant species that choke off the natives and volunteers realize that this process can be done only by hand. SDRPF has organized volunteer projects there every other month and it's a real pleasure for me to be a part of the leadership team there. The project is very well run and people enjoy working in the fresh ocean air. The volunteers can see first hand the results of their efforts. Most of them want to return to do more to maintain this beautiful area in its natural state. SDRPF is doing an outstanding job to facilitate volunteer participation to support this effort.
