Mission Statement

The mission of Solar Cookers International (SCI) is to improve human health, economic well-being, women’s empowerment, and the environment by promoting climate-friendly solar cooking for vulnerable populations worldwide. We work to solve the problem of inadequate household energy facing nearly 2.4 billion people on our planet. Since human health, quality of life, and environments are affected by cooking fuel choices, we offer a solution to the difficult choices nearly half of all families make every day: whether to buy fuel or to buy food and other family needs. The sun’s free energy is a viable solution for all who live where the sun shines. Solar cooker technology is a sustainable and environmentally responsible tool that helps families fight poverty and disease, and changes women’s and children’s lives for the better. Join us in empowering more women to improve their lives by learning how to cook with the sun.

Solar Cookers International is a great place to share your time and talents. I love the mission. Where else--in a single non-profit--can you help an organization that works on preventing deforestation, enhancing women's rights, slowing climate change, reducing death-dealing indoor air pollution, and more? Volunteer here to help SCI directly or indirectly as it brings together people all around the world to share technology and practices to spread the adoption of clean, fuel-free cooking. The office staff are always extremely appreciative of the work I do as a volunteer. That and the knowledge that I'm supporting such a fine cause are all the pay I need!

I've been volunteering at Solar Cookers International for five and a half months now. The staff and volunteers welcomed me with open arms. With a small, driven staff, the attention to my needs is a high priority. Everyone constantly makes sure I'm comfortable, and it really feels like home. When I first started volunteering at SCI, I wasn't aware that such a need for solar cooking was out there. Now I feel that I really understand an aspect of the global community that was a mystery to me. I am more than proud to be a part of this organization. Here's to coming up on six months at an organization that makes a huge difference in the quality of life for women and children, the whole world over! ...oh, and solar cooked cookies make a regular appearance, just saying.
