Mission Statement

To provide students who face extraordinary challenges and who are not supported in traditional high schools the opportunity to continue their education.

Description

Founded to provide at-risk youth with the tools and services they need to finish high school, complete the GED exam, and move onward to college or a vocational program, Next Step Public Charter School offers students the support, knowledge and skills they need to succeed academically and professionally.

Next Step PCS offers GED preparation in English and Spanish as well as English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to District youth between the ages of 16 and 24, through a full-time day program as well as a part-time night program. Bilingual staff (English and Spanish) and wrap-around case management provide NSPCS students with a safe and nurturing environment that supports students and their families.

Our curriculum is based on the Common Core Standards and GED skills, and organized around thematic units such as "Environment and Health" and "Empowerment." Teachers individualize instruction to help students achieve their academic goals at their own pace.

Next Step places students by skill level, rather than age or grade, and promotes students according to their progress. When students complete their program of study, The Next Step transition program assists students and alumni with continued education and career planning.

For students who face extraordinary challenges, Next Step is truly the first step towards a new life.

The Next Step/El Proximo Paso is a great organization to volunteer with. Both the students and the teachers are passionate about being there and the volunteer coordinator is friendly and easy to work with. As someone who works from 8-5 each day, it was a relief to finally find an organization who allowed for night tutoring! I am headed to Spain to teach English for a year or two, but I will certainly reach out to TNS when I return!

Next Step is a great place to volunteer. First off, it's hard to find tutoring opportunities when you work a normal 9-6 type of schedule (seems like most programs are after school from around 3-5pm), but because Next Step has evening classes it's easy to fit in. I volunteer once a week from 7-8pm, so it's a very manageable commitment. The location is conveniently a block away from the Columbia Heights metro. Most importantly, the students are so motivated to learn, so appreciative of having a tutor, and just all around a pleasure to work with. They inspire me. Most are in their late teens/early twenties and are very self-motivated and committed to getting an education. The program is well-coordinated and the school provides worksheets and textbooks, so you don't need to worry about preparing anything in advance. I highly recommend volunteering at Next Step!

Next Step Public Charter School is a great organization that has been a pleasure to volunteer with. The students are fired up about accomplishing their goal of passing the GED and the staff are equally as excited to help the students get there. Emanuel, the volunteer coordinator is extremely helpful and is fantastic about meeting schedule needs as well as allowing relationships to form as he pairs you with the same students to tutor as much as possible. If you live/work in the DC area and want a great organization to invest in, I would highly recommend you consider tutoring at Next Step.

I highly recommend tutoring at Next Step! It's a phenomenal opportunity to partner with students as they prepare for the GED exam. Students and staff are optimistic, dedicated, and very appreciative of their volunteers. Emanuel, the volunteer coordinator, does a great job organizing the program and always accommodates volunteers' schedules.

Next step charter school is amazing organization to volunteer with! Everyone is super friendly and welcoming. The students equally want the volunteers to be there! Also the organization is super accommodating around the volunteers schedules. It's also a great place to improve your Spanish! I worked The Next Public Charter School last semester as a tutor for English-language learners. I worked in both a private setting (one-on-one with students) and in the classroom setting - both experiences were incredible. The staff is friendly and helpful, and Emanuel, the volunteer coordinator, was an excellent communicator, responding to emails and answering questions promptly. Overall, I had a wonderful experience at The Next Step Public Charter School and would highly recommend it for those looking to volunteer and simultaneously improve their Spanish speaking skills!
