Mission Statement

The mission of Alum Rock Counseling Center (ARCC) is to heal families and inspire youth to reach their full potential.

Description

Since 1974, ARCC’s behavioral health & educational support programs have served as a lifeline for many under-resourced youth (age 0-25) and families in Santa Clara County, with a focus on their founding region of East San Jose. This includes a large number of immigrant families, where caregivers are monolingual Spanish-speakers, making it difficult for them to navigate the educational and healthcare systems and to access needed support. Offering culturally and linguistically sensitive youth & family counseling, educational assistance, life skills training, and trauma recovery & support, ARCC now serves thousands of high-risk youth annually in breaking cycles of trauma, juvenile delinquency, school failure, and sustained poverty. Our agency's overarching goals are to keep high-risk youth safe, in school and drug and violence free.

During my first year of college I decided I wanted to continue being involved with the community in some way. Coming from Southern CA to Northern CA, I was fortunate to meet the volunteer recruiter for Alum Rock Counseling Center. Impressed, with my versatile characteristics and personality, she already had in mind who my mentee will be. After being part of Alum Rock Counseling Center, I was able to mentor an eighth grader, from a local middle in San Jose, and share my Filipino culture with her. Although the year seemed short, I know we will continue having a relationship while she is in high school. This program is very well structured with supportive and experienced lead members, who have encouraged me to come back a second year.

I have been a Mentor for underprivileged youth through the Alum Rock Counseling Center for the past 3 years. It has been an extremely rewarding experience that I highly recommend to others. ARCC has a very organized program with training for both Mentors and Mentees that help both get the most out of the relationship. The time commitment is very flexible and there are also structured activities/outings to take part in if you have the time. It's a lot of fun and the kids are extremely appreciative. The Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for you to form a bond with a youth who can benefit tremendously from being exposed to different experiences and ideas and allows you to truly make a difference in someone's life.

Hi, my name is Rebecca Sandoval and I am currently a mentor for the Alum Rock Counseling Center and I love it. It has greatly impacted my life in a positive way. Allowing one to connect with a a younger student who attends an at-risk school and knowing that one can make a difference is priceless. Coming from a minority group myself makes me wish I had a great program like ARCC to help me out through middle school. There is no better feeling then giving back to the community and knowing that one can impact the future is amazing!
