Mission Statement

TwinCites Tutoring is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to bringing top-quality supplemental educational services to low-income and immigrant families in Minneapolis. Our mission is to train young people in the English language arts, to improve their performance in all school subjects, and prepare them for each new challenge as they progress through their academic careers. We tutor all subjects and grade levels, from early childhood literacy to advanced writing and math. Each day we match smart, passionate volunteers with students of all ages and ability levels from our extensive network of client families. Tutoring is done on a group and individual basis with all tutoring materials provided. We aim to increase learning independence by providing students with learning tools, not answers; we teach our students not what to think, but how to think. Students' growing confidence in their own abilities increases their self-reliance; they become self-motivated learners.

Description

Community & Family: We tutor in community rooms and centers in south and northeast Minneapolis, matching volunteer tutors with K-12 students of mostly Somali descent who need extra language instruction, reading assistance or help with their homework. Over the past four years, we have tutored more than 700 Somali youth and dozens of adults.

We tutor all subjects and grade levels, from early childhood literacy to advanced math and science to the humanities and social sciences. Tutoring is done on a group and individual basis with all tutoring materials provided.
