Mission Statement

Family homelessness is damaging to everyone it touches. Save the Family empowers families to conquer homelessness and achieve life-long independence. We envision communities free from family homelessness.

Description

Save the Family has been serving homeless families with children for more than 20 years. Founded in 1988, Save the Family was created to help homeless families become self-sufficient. In 1989, the agency acquired four housing units and served the first four families, who were referred from a local domestic violence shelter.

Early on, Save the Family recognized the need for services beyond just housing. Adult classes centered on parenting and personal growth and development, while children's classes offered expressive art activities, aimed at assisting children with sharing their experience of homelessness.

Program services now include career development, financial planning, education and support for domestic violence, tutoring, after-school classes and tuition dollars for summer camps and extracurricular activities.

Volunteers have, and will continue to play, an integral role in Save the Family's success. We rely on a robust volunteer base to provide various services such as: legal, medical and dental support, rehabilitation of our housing units, and classroom support as tutors and mentors.

Save the Family's success is a testament to the determination and hard work invested by homeless families and domestic violence victims who truly desire a better life. The growth of our facilities, and the expansion of our services make it possible for families to conquer homelessness and achieve life-long independence.

I was told I would be contacted about another opportunity which the hiring manager said he would submit my information for. However I was never contacted nor were my emails or phone messages replied to. I would have preferred and accepted a "no" over no reply at all.

What a fantastic organization. One view of their Facebook shows how many people they are helping on a daily basis.

The Volunteer Manager at Save the Family has been absolutely wonderful! She always responds quickly and provides such detailed information. I have volunteered with the Sack Meal Program and recently my son completed his Eagle Scout Project with Save the Family. They couldn't have a more seamless and organized volunteer process. I know the Volunteer Manager is super busy but she provided excellent follow up and guidance for my son's Eagle Scout Project. I would recommend volunteering with the agency without a doubt!

My friend and I volunteered for the reading program and it was so much fun! The volunteer staff was awesome. They returned my email the same day and answered all my questions. The day of the opportunity I came a little early to tour the facility and learn more about the organization. I really enjoyed my experience and can't wait until next week!

Save the Family is the best volunteer experience I have had. From my inital contact with the volunteer staff to the opportunity where I read to the children. I had a great time and look forward to my next opportunity with them!

Although I think the agency does good work, they are not organized when it comes to the volunteers. Since the first (and last time) I volunteered, they call me every few weeks. Each week it is the same question, "What is your avalibility?" Each time I tell them the same thing and they say they will call me in a couple of days. I also say that is what I have heard and they say they had some issues but are working on this program. I have time to volunteer and a real willingness to help, but I want to do it with a group that is organized and utilizes its volunteers.
