The African-American Shakespeare provides mainstage performances in the Bay Area any time between August - May. Our 2006 Season will commence from September 2006 - May 2007. The productions for the season includes: Carmen Jones, Cinderella, The Othello Papers, Comedy of Errors, Alice and the Wonderland Revue.
"Shake-It-Up" Arts Education Program
A multi-prong approach to the educational and community development needs of students, teachers, and families through theater. The program includes an interactive theater workshop and performance in the school (School Tour); a drama outreach for middle school students in the African-American Western Addition neighborhood in San Francisco (Arts-4-Now); and a youth touring program for high school students serving various Park & Recreation Centers in the Bay Area (Summer Youth Troupe).
Mission Statement
African-American Shakespeare Company was introduced in 1994 to create an opportunity and a venue for minority actors to hone their skills and talent in mastering some of the world's greatest classical roles; and to unlock the realm of classic theatre to a diverse audience who have been alienated from discovering these time-favored works in a style that reaches, speaks, and embraces their cultural aesthetic and identity.
Drawing on our own imagination, creativity, experience, and the resources at our disposal, we strive to provide the world with the best theatrical experience that combines a rich cultural aesthetic within a world-classic production in a manner that is lively, entertaining, and rings relevant to diverse contemporary audiences.
