Seeds in the Middle began in 2009 at a school in a low-income neighborhood in Brooklyn to empower students, schools and their communities to create healthier places to live and learn. We have 18 schools in NYC who would like our student-run farm stands, Hip2B Healthy Cafes and other programs that help communities themselves fight and overcome food insecurity and health and educational disparities. We need to raise funds for them. We know we need to show our impact. So, we need folks who can interview people impacted by our programs, collect data about the communities, and graphics and help us create a wonderful impact report. We welcome all talents in this - this is about empowering people to change their food and environmental landscape in our poorest neighborhoods. All of our schools are in food-insecure areas, predominantly neighborhoods of color. Please help us collect data or even come up with fundraising ideas. Feel free to email us at info@seedsinthemiddle.org

Seeds in the Middle is dedicated to erasing food deserts in NYC, particularly central Brooklyn and it all comes back to empowering the local community to create the change they want to see - with support from us! We have a series of community and school-run farm markets and edible gardens and we are opening more. We now want to begin Hip2B Healthy Cafes run by locals - youth to seniors- in neighborhoods lacking nutritious ,delicious options for eating out... or catering in. Are you a healthy chef? Do you like to cook fresh and healthy and want to share? Do you spend time crafting recipes using fresh ingredients to empower lucky eaters to build their immune systems and enjoy a healthy life? Would you like to work with community members to create menus and craft cafes tied to local schools, businesses and other possiiilities. If so, please reach out. Times are flexible. Our school markets are across Brooklyn, Bronx, even lower East Side. Commitment would be one afternoon. If you want to develop a series of cooking classes with fresh ingredients with students, and can offer a curriculum, please let us know. Our biggest days for markets are Wednesday, Thursdays, Fridays. Coming soon - other weekend markets in Flatbush, Brownsville, Crown Heights - we hope if you can volunteer. We also welcome you to vollunteer with kids at our spring Tastes of Brooklyn food and drink crawl. THese were spring 2023. We will be planning more in spring 2024, with your help. Saturday, March 25 - Franklin Ave. Saturday, April 29 - Bed-Stuy Saturday, May 6. Pop-up on Watkins Street, Brownsville Saturday, May 20, Gowanus Saturday, Jun e3, Park Slope - 5th Avenue Please go to the web link to tell us what you can do: bit.ly/seedsvolunteersignup Learn more about our locations by going to linktr.ee/seedsinthemiddle Questions: email info@seedsinthemiddle.org Please send any responses to that email address and tell us about you, what you can cook, when you can cook and anything you would like us to know.

Seeds in the Middle will be running student-run farm stands across NYC for 2024. We are particularly seeking for people who would like to adopt a school farm stand and help students and community get more neighbors to shop at the market and help the school community build the market so it can become a fundraiser for the school. The markets are generally on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays, set up starting at about 12:30-1 - and breakdown between 4-5:30p. - you can volunteer for a date and come even for 2 hours. Our markets also need your help to advertise to the community, offering healthy recipes or doing cooking demos to attract people, maybe delivering bags to seniors or those in need in nearby buildings. If you have any experience running farm stands or gardens or farms, and believe in teaching people "to fish" so they can ensure they have fresh food markets like others in more affluent places, this may be for you. You need to commit to come at least 4 times... and And be screened by the director. This is a great internship possibility for those interesting in tackling food injustice, and building food equity, and fighting food insecurity. If there are other markets you'd like to help at - just go to our volunteer page at https://bit.ly/volunteerwithseeds See all our markets - https://bit.ly/seedsinthemiddlemap

In May 2024, Seeds in the Middle plans its 4th annual Healthy Food Day of Action. We need everyone who cares about food justice and wants to overcome food, health, educational disparities to come on board! We believe healthy eating is a civil right and we have asked for funding to ensure every school or community in food deserts in NYC can set up their own locally run farm stands and fresh markets and cafes, especially by students in schools. Tentative dates is Wednesday, May 22, 2024. On Healthy Food Day of Action: 9-10a: Meet at Borough Hall and make signs 10:15a - Walk over Brooklyn Bridge with signs and chanting to City Hall with Brooklyn students demanding fresh food for all 11a - 12p - News conference and join students to give letters and petitions to members of Mayor Adams' office and City Council members 12-1p - speak to reporters, have lunch If you can help before Healthy Food Day of Action, here's where we need help: 1. Join us in classrooms or virtually to coach students on how to write letters to their elected officials 2. Help advertise the event and recruit more schools and marchers 3. Get petition signature from anyone! 4. Help advocate for food justice and do anything to get people to join us 5. Put signs up for event and spread word via social media, etc. See us in 2023: https://bronx.news12.com/brooklyn-students-battle-for-funding-to-combat-food-insecurity See us in 2022 - https://pix11.com/news/local-news/brooklyn/brooklyn-families-seek-increased-access-to-fresh-produce/ See us in 2021: The War Against Food Deserts - https://www.amny.com/lifestyle/city-living/he-war-against-food-deserts-children-march-over-brooklyn-bridge-calling-for-healthier-options/ Please reply back with what you can do or go to bit.ly/seedsvolunteersignup
