CROSSING THE LINE TOGETHER
BACKGROUND INFORMATION. JAN 2005
Operation Interdependence is the premier civilian-to-military delivery system in the United States providing a means for one person at home to send a personal note and some treats to one person on the frontlines on their behalf, without impacting military resources. Enough of these individual care packages, called civilian rations or c-rats , are delivered to the frontlines to cover each entire platoon or fighting unit with no one left out. For some, the c-rats from OI are the only communication from home that they receive.
Mr. Albert R. Renteria, a Marine of 26 years service, founded Operation Interdependence in December 2001. Since its foundation Operation Interdependence , OI , has become the fastest growing volunteer organization in the US. The OI logistical civilian-to-military delivery system provides a secure and streamlined means for the American people to deliver their well wishes to those in harm?s way on their behalf without overloading the military delivery system.
The goal for Operation Interdependence is to provide each service man or woman with some treats and a letter from home each month during service person?s entire deployment with no-one left out. OI is well on its way to achieving that goal. Working interdependently with organizations, public bodies, corporations and the media. Acting as an umbrella agency for sending care packages responsibly, OI ensures that the kind thoughts of people across the US, reach their destination on the frontlines responsibly. Since our launch during December 2001, OI has delivered over 1million c-rats
The key points of OI are:
Logistics ? OI has been designed not to impact military resources. Boxes are sent out once a month and the civilian rations (c-rats) themselves are designed to be 'grab-n-go' making them easy and quick to distribute. No troops are taken away from training or operations to administrate the delivery of the c-rats . OI DOES NOT contribute to the logjam of care packages often experienced by the military. Instead of 100 boxes reaching 100 troops, with the OI civilian-to-military delivery system 100 boxes reach 5,000 troops, streamlining delivery and conserving resources and opening up the system to allow letters from mom to be a priority delivery.
Security - All participants in the program have to register and are security checked before they can proceed. All c-rats are packed and inspected by OI and go through a screening process before they are sent out.
Fun - Our credo is that for all participants OI should be fun and never be a burden. For instance we took OI to the American Music Awards, the Oscars and the American Country Music Awards and received heartfelt notes from the artists which were sent out to some very surprised and amazed troops on the frontlines.
